Pallet shipping stuff

Hello, I have a few things I want to sell that are too big/heavy for normal parcel delivery (although correct me if I am wrong)

1 is a Sickle bar mower (modern one) The size of a big lawnmower.
Other is a Lister D series Stationary Engine

Hows does pallet lining work. Any ideas of good suppliers. I have plenty of pallets (form building work we had done) DO I need to wrap it up etc.

How big are the trucks as I have an issue with access down the lane my farms down.

Any info appreciated and the Mower is £295 and the Lister is £75!!!!!!!

I have sent a few things by pallet (series truck cab, set of wheels and tyres, running machine, engine block)
I have either taken the stuff to the depot in back of landrover and they fork lift the pallet out or a truck has come to collect (when someone else has arranged/paid for collection). The trucks have been BIG like a house removal van with a tail lift and the guy used a pallet truck to load onto lift.
  I get a pallet and make it strong and put a plank n underside in middle so it rocks, that way I can walk it around with the load on. I strap down the load as best as possible and then I tightly wrap it with packing cling-film stuff (i picked up a big roll from somewhere and it lasted years). Then I make a couple of  BIG labels with all the details on and attach one on pallet and one on the wrapping.

Most transport firms won't allow their trucks off tarmac, for obvious reasons! So you might have to get it to the end of your lane. Also, request a tail lift collection, otherwise they sometimes assume you have a fork lift.

The main thing with loading a pallet is that it doesn't extend beyond the edge of the pallet and that is is secure.

Shop around the pallet carriers. Prices can vary considerably. They will need to know the height and weight.

I've very limited knowledge on pallets, other than I needed to get 4 33" mud tyres from bristol to sheffield.


A phone around got them picked up with truck from the guys yard (needed to be a business address??) pallet delivered for £35 IIRC. I chose the cheapest longest delivery option.

The arrived at 10:00 in the morning the next day.  This was a couple of years ago but can't imagine that the price has changed 'that' much.
