Disco 1 spare wheel carrier

Just a couple of quick questions:
Will 245/75 R16 tyres fit on the standard one without hitting the bumper? Or would I need one of the aftermarket ones which hold the wheel higher up?
Are the nuts inside the door that the securing bolts screw into captive, or will I get a series of horrible tinkling noises as they fall off if I remove the carrier?
I want to give mine a quick rub down and repaint, as it's a bit manky. I would just replace it but if I rub down, spray with rust-proofing primer and then spray black it'll be more robust than a 2nd hand one even if it does cost more to do. Obviously this will be simpler if I can remove it from the truck!

they are prety simple to remove just pop the door card of and you will see the 6 nuts on the other side you will need someone on the other side to hold the spaner. if you do recon your one just dubble check the welds I had one that looked fine but just shered of as i was trying to undo the wheel nut. i think you will get away with a 245/75 without it hiting the bumper. its a shame your not neerer i have an almost brand new standard one and a modifide one for sale cheep.

Thanks for that - looks like it'll be part of a complete back door overhaul then! I want to replace a few missing trim studs, fix the subwoofer box and the plastic door pocket thing, and possibly fit a ladder and move my CB aerial mount higher up.
I'll check the welds - I'd rather just clean up the one I've got though, if it's solid under the rust. Always better to re-use a basically sound component rather than chucking it and replacing.

I've got 265/70/17s which are 31.6" high compared to your 30.5" high so the answer is yes.

Thanks chaps - I'll be dealing with it when the weather warms up a bit. Bit too cold out there at the moment to take bits off, rub them down, and spray them!

I have 235 85 16's and the spare did hit the bumper so I ground off the bolts the wheel hangs off and made up this ...
three bolts welded to the back go through the origional mount and three on the front is where the wheel now hangs and it's about 1 1/2" higher and stainless... :D
the top bolt on the outside is longer with a hole for a padlock. works well and easy to do..

Land Rover tolerances again...
My 235/85 on standard ES alloys hangs on the back door and just clears the bumper (HD bumper, not a standard LR item..)
As stated above you will need a spare pair of hands when you remove the spare wheel carrier.
