Painting Galvanised steel?
« on: February 17, 2010, 09:18:36 »
Any tips on painting on top of galv?

I painted my treesliders with texture grip paint and the next day it was all faked on the floor with the now clean galv laughing at me.

I have a gallon of primer with a plain label of 'self etching primer' it's battleship grey so big clue as to where it come from, wondering if any ol'self-etch will be good for galv?

Can galv be plastic coated?

I've gone ahead and cracked open the tin of etch primer. The sliders had been on vehicle for couple years and are well weathered so hoping it be okay. I chucked in spray gun - bit thick so more or less splattered it on   Will see what tomorrow brings.

I think Galv can be powder coated, though it sounds a bit late for that advice

Most powder coat these days is electrostatic and applied over a zinc coating of some sort, though it isn't galvanising as such, it's goldy coloured IIRC but it helps the powder stick and stops rust getting back underneath it.

good for future reference cheers. I never had anything powder coated, not sure I have the budget or how to go about it.

You would be surprised at the cost, cheaper than you may think  ;)
Gold coloured zinc is electro plating, Galv is dipped in a molten bath of Zinc  ;)

From what I have been told certain powder is made for galv/zinc plate to go straight on, t-wash is for wet painting then etch, then primer, then top coat
