What to look for ? Disco 3.5 V8i
« on: February 19, 2010, 21:41:14 »
Ayup all,

I've come across a disco 3.5 v8i for sensible money n I've really got the urge for a V8 atm  [-o<

What should I be looking for ? I know discos suffer with boot floor rot and rear wheel arches but wot else ?

What problems are likely to be had with an engine thats done 140k ?

Or is it one to stay away from ?

Thanks Jon
Hit it till it breaks then hit it some more !

Hi

I am on my second Disco V8 first 3.5 and current 3.9 dont think you can beet the sound of the v8 engine.

Things to look for.

Signs of overheating, this is a common problem with the V8 engine especially when driven off road, and if driven to far can cause big problems.

Wheel wobble not specific to the V8 but mine, and I have heard of other has a very bad wheel wobble over 50mph.

Front inner wheel arches tend to rot.

Steve

Had my RRC V8 for 3 years now, its brilliant! The 3 things to look for are rust, rust and more rust, otherwise usual clonking noises,
Good luck,

If it's been looked after then 140k is fine, if it's been neglected then it won't.

Look for signs of overheating as said already, not easy to detect though but check the condition of the coolant.

Look inside the rocker cover, is it black death or is it a nice toast colour? if the later then it's been looked after, regular oil changes and not overheated.

RRC are fine off-road if the cooling is up to scratch, radiators tend to suffer though and a new one is £150-200   A recore about a ton.

Gearchange at that mileage, the LT77 is not renowned for lasting forever, think Sherpa van and you're about on the money.  The R380 is better and stronger but check for smooth gearshifts, no clunks or notches and definietly no jumping out of gear if you take your foot off the gas quickly.

Transfer box wants to work of course.

Body, well check the bit between the bumpers for rust ;) Any body mount, the outside/back edges of the inner wings, sills and A posts, C posts and wheelarch directly above the wheel (extends to the seat mount and seat belt anchor if bad), rear crossmember and boot floor are the favourites, check around the windows for signs of split rubbers and leaks too though, check the headlining for damp marks, these could both suggest a swimming pool on wheels which is a major cause of rusty Disco syndrome.

Check the front edges of the doors for rust too and the back around the lock, later doors are a bit prone to rusting, I think they have more metal in them to prevent side intrusion :-k
