which tyres?

Hi folks

I drive a navara double cab and its currently on 35 x 14.50 x 16 pitbull rocker tyres, said tyres are coming to the end of thier life and after being quoted £372 each i've been looking round for an alternative. im currently leaning towards 325/80 x 16 cooper stt's. According to the website these are an equivilent to 37 x 13.50 x 16. Do any of you peeps run coopers and have any feedback on them? or maybe you have an alternative? They have to be agressive/mud pattern and a bare minimum size of 35 x 12.50 x 16 but slightly bigger would be better. look forward to any comments/info you may have.

a mate has a set of Interco TSL thornbirds on his hilux (35's and 38's i think) and they look wicked

Got KL71 Kumho on mine. Road noise is minimal and good looking tyre tread wise.

question for ya how does a pickup fair off road my late uncle had a toyota hilux and my father in law says the tend to get stuck by being to light on the rear, my missus wants a warrior and go up the lanes with but im not sure whether its a good idea being a pickup with what i hear

Your compairing apples and organges.

Prior to the mk4 (iirc) the high lux is live axle front and rear with a long light buck on leafs all round.

The warrior (how gay?!?) is IFS up front generally with a crew cab putting a lot of weight mid ship with a shorter buck and less of an over hang.


What exactly is the question your asking?  Is a 4x4 capable of doing pretty much any green lane in Britain?  Yes a rav4 can, and so can any other 4x4.   Can a warrior flex like a live axle truck?  No.   Can a highlux go as well as a truck with better weigh distribution on a pay and play site?  No.

Does a jacked up lux running on 44's look better than pretty much every other 4x4?  Yes.

well wifey wants to lane in a warrior not me i geting my 90 in a couple of months fingers crossed but if she was to lane it would it be more liable to getting stuck was the question as i didn wanna take it out if it  gonna get stuck at every mud interval

with a set of all terrain tyres any double cab pick up will be fine on greenlanes. iv had been in some offroad at the royal show and they did the same course as defenders and vw tourags (spelt wrong, i know), with no problem. and if the back is too light, do what my dad did in the snow and chuck a couple of hundred kgs of bagged agregates in the back :twisted:

Any 4x4 is more than capable for most lanes in britain.  If you can fit 31's in the arches then it'll do 99% of the lanes. (I can count on 1 finger the lanes I know I wouldn't attempt in a truck with 31 inch tyres, and it's in cornwall and a waterfall - but I don't know all the lanes by a long strech).

Sounds like your new to the whole greenlaning 4x4 thang. There's a big difference between greenlaning (lovely peaceful pastime with great views and a brilliant chance to get to see parts of the country who few ever see) and pay and play sites (bang smash hahahaah  HAHAHAHA).

Find your feet and take it from there ----- massive off topic from the cooper sst's though - which are supposed to be very good, know a bloke with a set of 32's (265...) and always keeps up with the group....

well mine done stanage no problems and i often get laughed at by 90 drivers until i just drive straight past em  . most of that is down to the tyres tho

hi i know landrover guru ed coblys has copper stt on one of his work trucks and he has said there a good brand gets him through the mud and were great in the snow weve just had

cheers, the more research i do, i think coopers are the way to go especially as most of the more extreme mudders seem to come in 10.50 as thier widest and these are just too slim for my bus

Have you had a look at the simex range?

SST's aren't extreme, they are a good general MT, but hardly a directional tyre which will dig in hard.

Don't get me wrong, I like em, but if you want something to pull you through and out the other side there's better options out there.

I have a ford ranger and have bfg at's on and I find them great. In the snow ee had I was managing to get up hills that other cars couldnt get up. Yes ok it is light on the back end and on a slightly muddy field you will find it hard to get out in 2wd alone. I have never been stuck yet, even with a caravan on the back.

In the snow I put a 2 caravan water containers in the back and filled them full with water for added weight over the axle. Didnt have any problems. neighbour has a mitsi and he doesnt put anything in the back and rarely uses 4x4 in the snow. He has to drive accross fields most days for his job and he is on road tyres and tows trailers with minidiggers and says he rarely gets stuck.

so as for greenlanes. I reckon so. I cant wait to do my first laning trip down non scratchy lanes! :lol:

yeah i've had a look at simex but again they only seem to go upto 10.50
great looking tyres, i like em a lot. seems to be only the american stuff that has the size im after in agressive patterns and they are all hellish expensive so i may have to settle for a general MT pattern
