Had the same problem on my Disco. Turned out to be a problem with the fob. It may be worth checking the following;

1. split the fob.
2. Check the push buttons in the plastic cover still line up with the electronic button switches on the circuit board (PCB). They can shift postion over time, and suddenly you find the central locking doesn't work.
3. It may be worth operating the push buttons on the PCB while the fob cover is split. If the central locking works you know its a fob problem.

the quiet click in the door could indicate a relay problem?

What happens when you try the key in the lock? Does the central locking still not work - does the door open OK? The central locking module is connected to the drivers door lock by good old metal rods hooked onto a plastic/nylon loop.

Does it switch the immobiliser on and off that would indicate if the fob was working as they have a habit of becoming unsoldered where the battery carrier connects to the circuit board.

My Haynes shows no relay at all, just the drivers door module controlling everything protected by its own 15amp fuse in the fuse block. With the door card off you should be able to push the short rod on the right of the module in and out which will activate the module to lock and unlock all doors. I guess if this is dead then its the fuse or a new unit.

I'm with JPJ, there's nothing inside the door but the lock actuator - no relays/etc. If the actuator is duff then fear not as Maplins sell an equivalent for a few quid, as against a few tens of quid for the genuine LR one :-)

This may sound silly, but i assume you have tried spraying wd into the door lock if the key dont work? I know the pins can gum up and stop the key working, it happened on the father-in-laws Disco2 ignition and he could`nt start it and every time he tried it set the alarm off!!............ just an idea :?

Door locking is controlled by a central black box under the LH end of the dash, part of the alarm I think, at least that's how the 300series RRC works.  I think ours is faulty because the interior light is also controlled by this black box but ours isn't working.

getting a second hand one is not easy I've found.
