Diff Lock won't engage
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:51:01 »
Just bought a 300tdi 110 yesterday, first impressions all round are good, the engine and gearbox seem very strong and body/chassis mint. However, I can't get the diff-lock to engage, the lever moves to the left but springs back again and the light won't come on. Any ideas what it could be? Could it just be due to lack of use? It runs very well in high range but is a bit rattly in low, hope the transfer box isn't up the swanny!

take the middle seat (or cubby) off and unscrew the cover panel so you can have a better look at what's going on with the linkage, probably got a pile of crud around it to clean up.

Thanks, done that and had a good poke around. Well the diff-lock is definitely working, tested by jacking a wheel, and with plenty of jiggling around the lever now behaves normally.

I just need to try and fathom out where the diff-lock light switch is meant to be fitted, there are 2 wires coming from  a loom out of the chassis that have been terminated in ring connectors and fastened to the side of the transfer case via a 10mm bolt. I am guessing that these could be the switch wires as there is no other loom nearby.

Does anyone have a picture of where the switch should be please?

there are a couple of un-terminated wire on the loom around there as standard so maybe not the jobbies your after. The ones on the ring sound like earth wires anyway - I have seen them attached to on the hi-low housing on my box. The difflock lamp switch is topside near to and on same level as the difflock linkage, about 4 inch rearward from it, and has spade connections. You probably can't see it from the seatbox position as it's under the hi-lo link and tucked between the gearbox, you'll need to feel for it if I recall or use a mirror?.
Now you freed up the linkage and the loom on switch is present then before you fiddle with it have a drive around a short distance with it difflock engaged the light might come on after a little delay once the switch realises it free to pop out (mine currently does that). I have attached photo of a binned tranny , my finger pointing at the switch hopefully you can figure out where it is.
