I read somewhere that a much higher proportion of new owners are taking their vehicles off the black top!

Certainly round here, there are very few road warriors!

dunno, the whole LR USA  advertising campaign is prompting only on road use and how sitting in a LR is the best place to be on a dark rainy night or other road extremes, there is no hint that customers could aspire to leaving the asphalt.

My borther in law has jsut bought a Range Rover Sport, I've asked him if he wants to come laning with me, he says he will but as long as there's no risk of scratches!!

I've a few lane's and fords planned for him, and he's up for it so all's good there!

I've seena D3 and a new Range Rover on a play site once too, even with road tyres they are very capable!
Disco 300tdi - for laning
Suzuki Vitara - for playing!!

I know someone not a million miles away that had a brand spanking new Range Rover, that had its fair share of stickers and off road scratches.
I also bumped into a bloke with a Volvo 4x4 thing and I asked what it was like off road, and the look i got was worth its weight in gold.

I remember turning up to marshal at the Welsh Hill Rally and there was a guy with a brand new RR HSE, he followed me everywhere I went almost!! He was on standard road tyres and I was on muds!!

The only place he balked was when I headed off down a fire break

Admittedly it was a few years ago, but this is the newest motor I have seen at a PaynPlay, it was three months out of the factory on an 07 plate and didn't do too badly until this point.

My brother has taken his RR Supercharged laning with me across The Plain and also Pay and Play days. So, I guess the answer would be yes.
Saying that, I was astounded when Iwas speaking with our Black Rat, sorry, Traffic dept bods the other day. They have been told not to take their X5's off road in case they get stuck! Why get them in the first place?

Having off roaded a brand new X5 I can understand why they have been told not to off road them, it's expensive calling for recovery when they are stuck (which is often), awsome onroad though

Not just that - I remember reading a bit in one of the magazines when the X5 came out. Apparently their photographer had been asked to go and get some publicity shots of the X5, and being a 4x4 enthusiast he'd taken the chance to have a good nose around it. There were no proper front recovery points whatsoever!

If they'd stuck to buying the green oval as they used to do, their D3's or Range Rover's wouldn't have needed your help.

I think road tyres are better than mud patterns for rocky stuff. Certainly my Insa Dakars are nothing like as good on smooth slippery rock as my old BFG A/Ts were.

Tyre choice is everything. I've seen a D3 going nowhere in mud with all four wheels turning slowly (and an experienced 4x4 driver behind the wheel) while my D1 on BFG A/Ts was going everywhere, albeit with some unplanned drifting moments. The same vehicle a month later with better tyres was handling everything the driver could point it at.
