non starting Disco 1 200 tdi '91
« on: March 14, 2010, 21:31:16 »
I have a non starting 1991 H reg Disco 1 200 Tdi. Its completely standard & has prediominatly been used for green laning since bought 5 yrears ago. I have had to lay the vehicle up since last may due to being made redundant, and not being about to re new the insurance. Like a fool I left the vehicle standing until christmas without turning the engine over. Evidently I recharged the battery for 2days on slow charge & attempted to turn the engine over. All I got was a mechanical ticking noise from the engine & the thing wouldn`t turn over. It has fuel, about half a tank. Its done 245000 miles.

Any idea's? could it be the fuel solenoid valve sticking closed or be something else? I'm not that mechanically minded so bear with me.

It has an after market imobiller fitted,, which appears to be working fine.

Have I left it a tad too long? .

many thanks

Sounds like the solenoid clicking so could be the battery not putting out enough or the starter stuck. Try checking the battery voltage or jump starting it. If that doesn't wosk the check over the starter motor.

Probably the battery. When left for a while uncharged, the plates oxidise and the battery then wont hold a charge.

It does sound like either a flat battery or possible sticking starter,

Try a jump start or get an assistant to turn the key, while you tap the starter motor with a hammer,

if you dont have an assistant its possible to rewire it slightly to do the job single handed, but i dont want to go into details on a public forum.

send me a pm if u want to know what to do

its a 200, itll start
just bridge the terminal on the starter with the ignition and see if she turns over.
make sure it isnt in gear though.
you'll proberly find due to condensation build up in the bellhousing, you will have to whip the starter off and clean up the pinion and shaft as it'll be semi-siezed causing a lazy starter

what i was thinking, if left flat for to long they dont hold charge

thanks for the info, was the battery, it seems after a jump start & a charge overnight that the engine finally turned over. It looks a new battery is in order when i put it through the MOT!
