Play in steering
« on: April 17, 2005, 18:19:30 »
Hi - Hope some one can tell me or shed some light on this for me.

I have a 1990 2.5td disco.

I have a good 15 - 30 degrees of play in my steering wheel.

all the conecting rods to the steering box seem fine - does any one know if I can take the play up on the box or is this a new box job ?

on the subject of a steering box any idea's how much I would expect to pay for said item ?

Many thanks

Peter

On top of the steering box you'll see a nut locking an allen screw in place. With the wheels in the straight ahead position, undo the locknut and turn the allen screw 90 degrees clockwise, then check the play again. Keep doing this until you get the required backlash in the steering box.

When correctly tightened you should still have 1-2 inches of rotation on the steering wheel, measured at the O/D of the steering wheel.
If, when tightening the allen screw, it goes solid then, providing the locknut is loose, then you don't have any adjustment left and another steering box will be required.
If you over-tighten the allen screw then this will put extra stress on the box, leading to excessive ware.

Approx prices are:
New - £280
Recon - £160
Second Hand -  :?:

I'm sure the above is correct and, if it's not quite there, then someone will put me right.

Just so happens i had about 1-2 inch play in my steering wheel as well. Took it to the TONKS 4x4 (garage near me) and he replaced 3 out of the 4 track rod ends. Sorted, got it tracked up and its much better. Nice and tight, where you point the steering wheel it goes now  :D

One thing you can try is to check the panhard rod bushes, quite amusing if its them, start it up, reach through the window and take up the slack side to side on the steering wheel, and watch the front wheel to wheel arch, to see of the body moves but the wheels stay still

You're not wrong there.  It's easier to trace the play if therr are 2 of you though, as there are plenty of places that it could be as stated above.  For the cost of balljoints I would swap the lot before you pay to have the tracking done.

We'll need some pictures of your motor if you want us to help you spend your money, but the cheapest accessory is a bit of MUD.
