How unlucky can one person get!!!
« on: March 20, 2010, 18:59:06 »
I'm changing my truck, and seeing as i have 4 pin diffs front and rear, i wanted standard one to put in so as to keep the 4 pins.....

So, i went to the local 'specialist'..... and bought 2 second hand 24 spline diffs for £100. got home, 18miles and checked them, one was a flippin 10 spline!!
So, got in the car this morning and went and swapped it, no problem, apart from the 36 mile trip!
So, get home, and started cleaning them up, only to find that the pinion bearing in the first one is knackered, which has allowed the pinion to move into the crownwheel too far, and knock the edges off the crownwheel.....

So, do i bother going back again, or do i teach myself a £50 lesson and not buy any more crap from this so called specialist, who firstly can't count, and secondly doesn;t check what they're selling, granted i should have checked myself, but you con;t expect to have to do you..!!!
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

Well, i did take it back and swap it for another diff, checked it quickly in the place..........

However, when i got home, i found that there is distinct in/out movement in the pinion........... ie, knackered.........!!

Phone them, report the problem, and ask that they organise a courier to come and collect the offending item. You've already driven over 70 miles and wasted about four hours (at a guess - including time at the shop and time finding the problems), why should you keep driving back and forth because they can't supply good parts?

Trading standards might also be interested. You may not be the first person to complain to them.

Their contract is only the supply of goods, so technically, they don't have any responsibility for the associated costs. However, if they want to keep your future business, they should fall over themselves to help you out.

Well, contrary to everyones advice, i simply stripped the diff down, and used the best bits of it along with the case and c&p from another diff to put one together..... this one was the last 24 spline one the guy had anyway, so no point in trying to get another, ok, so could have got my money back, but i didn;t get a ticket...;)......

Anyways, by the end of the day i should know if the diff i put togther is any good....LOL!!
