after a little bit of investigating it seems (after i refilled it with water and beld it.. ) the water is infact leaking from the top pipe under the Circ clip.. hopefully just a pipe will sort it ! is there an easy way to tell the waterpump is not broken or leaking ?  if im ordering bits i dont want to order a pump if i dont need one !

you do know what you have taken photo of there is not the water pump right? it's the serpentine belt tensioner.

long as gasket is intact the pump should not leak unless the bearing is starting to wear then water will start to drip from a small hole (if present on 300tdi pumps?) on the under side of fan shaft housing, that is designed as early warning that pump needs changing.

Have known a new britpart pump shear off it impeller couple miles after fitting (2.25 series engine)   so don't think it wise to fit cheap pumps to the likes of a tdi.

I imagine if you wanted to quickly test pump then remove the cable off the stop solenoid so engine doesn't start, loosen off a hose and turn over engine over briefly - water should surge out.

I think it common for the housing the top hose fits on gets pitted with corrosion and helps hose leak. I have been fitting double jubilee clips at that point to help towards maintaining a good seal.

a trick i have used before on a badly sealing pipe is to smear some waterproof sealant round the joint betore fitting the pipe
As a youth I could run up and down stairs all day now I'm older it takes me all day just to walk upstairs
