SD1 V8 into 90 bell housing cover
« on: April 12, 2010, 22:47:49 »
Looking for some advice. I have just bought a 1987 90 CSW, with a recently fitted SD1 V8. It’s a pretty nice job, runs fantastically. But when I got underneath to have a good look round I noticed that the half moon shape cover plate that should cover the lower half of the bell housing is missing. I then notice there is a nice new plate in the back of the truck. OK I though just a case of fitting it, but when looking to see how it all matches up I notice the sump of the engine protrudes leaving only 3mm to form a seal meaning the plate needing quite a bit of cutting.
Has anyone any advice on how best to get the cover fitted securely to keep crud out. I am sure plenty of trucks have had this conversion?

Hi Ian,

Long time no speak, I cant believe you have gone all 90 on us... :-o...I have just bought yet another disco over the weekend...Its funny...Because I buy one, fully kit it out then sell it without really using it...Then end up buying another one a few months later..I must be mad..I also have a nice Honda crf250 motox bike, a few of us got into it last year...Only trouble is when you come off it bloody hurts, and me not being 21 anymore it takes longer to recover...Also being self employed means if I break a leg I cant work...So I decided to get back into the laning and from the looks of it all the other guys are selling there bikes and doing the same.

I'm sorry I cant help you here mate, just thought I'd say hi and hope we can do some lanes again mate, I have two really nice mates who would love to come along in there disco's...

All the best, Terry

If you only have 3mm or so then I'd suggest getting some 3mmm plate steel and making a new cover to fit, it will be stronger than cutting down an ali casting.

IIRC there are 2 bolts that have a tapered shank too, one either side, these force the cover upwards to seal the top edge.
