respray / paint job
« on: April 15, 2010, 14:04:45 »
well first of all the people who i got my disco of have hand painted the car. It looks good i kinda like the rough and ready look of the paint job which is military green and black.

the down side is that when they painted it they mustn't have flattend the paint and just painted over the metallic finish of the original Lr paint job and after i go on pay and play days i jet wash the car when i get back and its starting to flake the paint in diff spots on the body and roof.

my questions are
1. very roughly (as it depends on the individual spray shop) how much would i be looking to fork out for a respray of the car in say black ?
2. how much would a spraying kit and paint set me back
3. is spraying hard ? i wouldn't mind giving it ago but as Ive never done it before is it to much of a job for a first timer ?

thanks in advance

Ive always wanted to know this also but have in the past had a little go myself.. to do it on the cheep I would do one panel at a time rough it up plenty of primer ( hamerite spray primer drys nice and hard ) then a mat black spray paint it takes a day or to to harden.. I have done my bonet like this and go laneing all the time its quite tough. the thing about painting it yourself you can always touch it up should you get any scraches.

I would like to see the curent paint job as im aiming for something similer for my new build

1.repaint will cost you from £500 upwards
2.spraying kit := you would need a compressor spray gun breathing apparatus & a good size garage
3.to do a descent job you will need lots of practice

if the paint is flaking off now it always will so even if the paint you put on addhears to the paint they have put on it will still come off, so in a nut shell you need to remove all of the paint they have put on, my suggestion would be to sand it off with an electric orbital sander & then get resprayed or even roller/brush it yourself

where are you based ?

Ive painted loads of motors, and to be honest ive found the best way is  to nitromors (paint stripper) to bare metal and start again!! This way you get no reaction and you dont have to buy a sealent which aint cheap. You need to etch the motor up costing about £8 a tin, using about 7-8 tin on a diso. I use oil based synthetic costing about £25 for 2.5 litres and 2 of these would put more than anoth paint on a disco!I use petrol to add to the paint which gives a really good finish.I painted my taxi 7 years ago and council tests are the most strict tests going on appearences and it flew through!! I only use a cheap gun which you get with the cheap compressors and it isnt gravit :dance:y fed.It all comes down to preparation and keeping your gun clean.

My mate uses a hot air gun to strip paintwork, you might find the brushed on stuff will lift without taking all the paint off.  Also if it's metallic then the laquer will be resistant to overspraying with primer.

Use synthetic water based primer if you overpaint, if you strip back to bare metal use an etch primer.

I bouth my gun new for £35, it';s Indian made but uses a copy of the Devilbis nozzle (they cost more than my gun ) and a compressor, well spend as much as you can afford, you need roughly 4cfm upwards and a decent tank on it, plus a water filter in your air line.

Cheaper way is an electric spray gun, all in one for under £100, works great with Synthetic.

DO NOT use isocyanate based 2-pack, it will kill you.

chris it all depends on what look your after. if you want a nice shiny motor for posing in then you would be looking at anywhere from £600 upwards to paint the car.

if your after something thats easy to maintain and hard wearing and dont break the bank then satin black paint is very chap and easy to apply.

if you want you can buy a cheap compresser / spray kit and havea go. ive known people to go and buy electric sprayers from the likes of B and Q and used them in there garage or driveway and still made a decent job.

personally i find spray cans are just as good. if you can get a memebership to one of thes motorsaes wholesale places then you can pay as little as 99p a can.

i have painted many cars in satin / matt black.

ths was all paintd using spray cans

so a paint job dont need to be expensive

At the other end of the scale, Julie's TDi cost about £2k to respray, proffesional job in a workshop.
