on road stuff looked good, but the off-road test - while a nice idea - was poorly executed. Having played with one I can assure they are way better than he made them out to be. Once again 5th gear should be renamed parking gear. But what the hell its yet more infotainment so why should we really care?

Whilst, as as stated previously, it was a nice idea as a comparison.

At least he did state that the tyres were a major factor, but given the major 'blowing of trumpets' over it's off-tarmac performance I expected better from the technology.

'Top Gear' (or was it one of Clarksons own programmes?) did it better before with the Overfinch racing the ??(can't remember) whilst on grass -admittedly dry grass.
They also raced against a Focus whilst towing a flat-bed loaded with another Focus

Ahh. the 'Classic' Range Rover, a 'L' plate Vogue LSE, but pre-'soft-dash'

I'd ditch the Discovery tomorrow for a decent Tdi 'Classic'

Oh yes indeed, I'd even put up with slaughtermatic for a nice LSE, but not an oil burner, one has standards after all.

Once again 5th Gear shows its self to be a complete waste of space
on TV.

Tif Needell, what a twonk !!  spinning the wheels like that to pull away
surely, pulling away slowly and then speeding up would have given the "traction control"  some sort of helping hand....
Granted ......slick road tyres are not the best thing to use on a soaking wet field...........Why did they even try it ??
And as for the down hill bit.........
"feet of everything and hands free"............I was always told to hold onto
steering wheel to correct any possible slide............oh well !!

I'll hand over the soap box to the next person

OK... far be it from me to disagree with the consensus ;-)  but bear in mind that this is a television programme.   The item is designed to be gimmicky, to  provide entertainment and to get people talking about the show (seems to have worked)...   It isn't supposed to be a proper test of the vehicle.

I wonder if there would have been this much outcry if the piece was run the same way but with a Pajero instead ?

Is there an email address to respond to this? Ask them to take an off road course before they make themselves look even more stupid than they are    There's plenty of experience in this club to do that.  Before hubby (Tazman) took the then Shogun off road, he booked himself on a course in the Forest of Dean for a whole day.  You wouldn't get in an artic and drive off - 4x4s are NOT the same as a Ford Focus    Plus, yet again, it paints us all with that familiar brush :(

Yes it got people talking BUT who actually stated in the programme that it was a gimmicky silly bit, don't do it at home - ISTR saying something similar when they thrashed the LR3 all over the place - whats to stop normal (well, affluent anyway) people watching it, going out and buying one (or any "off road vehicle / 4x4 / SUV etc. etc.") and then thrashing it all over the place because "that's how they do it on TV"  :?:

More fuel for the fire

I don't need to be told what to do and what not to do by a TV programme thanks.....   I happen to have a big 4x4 and a wet muddy field... and horses...  but I have no intention of trying it because I have a sufficient intelligence not to, and I take responsibility for my own actions

Of course, Tim is right (yet again     ). It is meant to be entertainment first, educational second. If you want to buy a Vectra, you go out and test one. You certainly don't wait for Tiff to test drive one on TV. I have never seen these programs as consumer fodder, just light entertainment.

The comparison of 'soft-roaders' (hate that term!) was much the same. Loads of throttle up a slightly muddy slope and stopped half way up. No surprises there then.

The blasting around a field doesn't give me too much problem. More concerned over the Disco 3 article a while back that specifically said to find a green lane and get muddy.

Ermm, yes he is.
He has had (at least) oneseason in Formula 1, races at Le Mans.

V B-H also has a 'background'; karts, single-seaters, single-make championships. Her brother also is quite succesful (I understand) on the track

Tim you're dead right - trouble is tho *we* all know what we should and shouldn't do - its the plebs and hooligans that are giving us a bad name in other aspects of owning a 4x4 that are the one's that need to be told and unfortunately due to the nature of these people's mentality they won't be told anyway.
