fuming!
« on: April 29, 2010, 20:20:13 »
actually spitting!

i went on my ipaf course today with one of our new starts(who starts on tuesday) only to learn that he will be starting on more money than me! ive been at the firm for 16 months. have not recived a pay rise (so essentially ive taken a paycut when you take into account inflation)and they bring this new guy in who starts on more money and gets all the training i should have got when i started (but i diddnt)

now, its a small firm so evereyone can talk to evereyone else fairly easeley, not really a matter of us and them when it comes to the managers and the operators so its difficult to keep secrets. the fact that there bringing on one new bloke who is on more money than me is bad enough........but when there bringing in 4 more people 3 of whitch are younger than i am the other only older by a year. none of them have any engineering knowledge and there all on a higher rate is just insulting.

dont get me wrong i am very very greatfull for having a job, but when i work as hard as i do (averaging a 50 hour week, after brakes) and the company does this sort of thing....what the hell!

PM me for my cv

Maybe he negotiated a better wage for himself, have you tried likewise at your periodic reviews?

Somebody with loads of experience and fantastic technical know-how may not necessarily be a good negotiator.  Does that mean an engineer (or any other techie) should get crap pay?

A few years ago (circa 1990) I worked as a trainer for a large training organisation in Birmingham, following their usual procedures they advertised a 'trainee' trainer position internally before advertising it to the public.  I was fuming - the starting pay they were offering was 2 grand a year more than I was on!  And in 1990 2 grand was worth a lot more than it is today.

So following company procedures I asked my manager if I could apply for the position.....  I got my pay rise.

I have the added disadvantage of being a female 'techie', it looks like I will have to change job again just to try to keep up with the pay rates being offered to my male colleagues.  Getting equal pay is next to impossible in a small company, the number of excuses, oh sorry 'reasons' are amazing.

Honestly I believe that sometimes the only way is  to jump ship and get a better deal at the start of the new employment, sometimes it scares the company you are with into at least matching the pay rate they offered the new employee.

Oh and before somebody say it might be because I am no good at my job, or have poor attendance or something.  I am considered very good at my job and have been 'head-hunted' twice.  Each time the company I was with said 'if its a matter of pay ... ' in one case only two weeks after a review where I was told there was 'absolutely no chance of any pay rises in the current year....'

Only in a large company with a grading and pay structure is there any hope - and just look whats happened at Birmingham council!

So good luck with your re-negotiation, or the job hunting whichever you decide to do.

Try working in IT. Pay rises just don't happen. Promotions do, just never cost of living...

Pop down your local CAB and have a chat. I'm pretty sure they are sitting on a legal fence with their feet dangling on the wrong side. Something to do with 2 people doing the same job should (give or take) be payed the same amount. Don't go bull in a china shop at work, it might just be an over sight.  Hell I used to manage 45 people, at any one time I couldn't have accuratly told you all their wages.

Just remember this when you are 42 and they bring in a 21 year old on double the money you are on.  Life isn't fair, pal of mine earns a seven figure salary and he is under 30....

Don't get het up about age and experience, your boss will pay either what he thinks you are worth or as little as he can get away with.  If you think you are worth more then tell him, just make sure you have a really good explanation though.

Good luck.

my job title is "trainee" but evereyone including my manager says im past  trainee, i run rings around someof the people that have been there longer than me. I wouldnt like to say how much i have saved them this year, ive rebuilt 2 hoists(both around 20-30k each) lost count of howmany times ive fixed the winches...which without they couldnt load the trucks and still do my job.would think my time is worth more to them than this.↲i wouldnt normally care but when you ask for a payrise and they say "company got no money" then 4 new people come in, a maniger gets bought a brand new jag xf, another a top of the line mondeo. 2 new height rider 21 MEWPs and a rumor i heard yesterday was a wumag 52m truck mount. Im not the only one feeling this way pretty much everey one is and it does seem that jumping ship is the only solution. But they wont care. Ivebeen told in the past 7 years they have had 50 people come and go!

Ask your bosses boss out for a beer because you've a few issues you want to get off your chest, but be casual and upbeat about it.  Take it as relaxed as possibly and what ever you do don't make an idiot of yourself.

Buy HIM a beer and explain your concerns. Out of an office environment and a bit of lubrication in you both you might be able to work something out, or get a better understanding of why the company works in the way it does.

Don't deal with your direct line management / boss - he'll have no power to make any changed.

Next time they advertise for trainees, apply for the job.  It obviously pays better than the job you have now ;)

toSeriously though, this sucks.  They probably had to offer the "going rate" and now it's up to you to negotiate a similar amount.

Lots of companies will cut thier nose off to spite their face and let you go rather than give you more money.  You have to argue that if you leave your replacement will cost the same and have less knowledge and experience.

Oh, and if they aren't paying you as much, stop doing them favours!

Hell I've got a degree and a PGCE and I only make £21,000.

Might have to go and be a street sweeper in Birmingham, the media reckon they make over £30k, that's even more than a binman in Leeds! (£18,500)

And for the record, most signallers work a 48hour week and don't earn a third of that.

PGCE = teacher = government advert = snotty nosed youth on at least £35k

You start on 21k, after 6 years it goes up to 30k

35 k is what's called post-threshold.  You have to "pass" threshold which means it goes on the evidence of your CPD, track record etc  post-threshold the pay rises are much of a muchness with industry ie few and far between.

At least I know exaclty what I'll earn (at the moment) because it's nationally agreed.  If you belive the adverts I'd have earned 30k as a driving instructor  I don't know any that do that well.

All I got from my last boss was "oh" when I handed in my notice. They have had 4 people in since I left, all have left/sacked in 8 weeks as they can not do the job.

Your best off staying till you find another job.

Does it put you level with the newbies?  if it does perhaps you aren't so badly off (only you can really say that) as long as they don't hold it against you.  If anyone way to be made redundant you'd have lenght of service, plus all the "favours" you do for them would count in your favour.

Just don't do anything in haste.
