welders, generators, kva and that?
« on: May 10, 2010, 21:22:47 »
hi i'm looking at a new genny for my arc welder. problem is the welder gives power as amps at between 14 odd and 24 odd volts not 240 so how does one determin the draw for one in terms of the other? a convertor of kva's into ?welder units? would be good if anysuch exists.

cheers in advance.

If I've got this right KVA is kilo-volt-amps.  Volt-amps is sort of like watts except that with AC the current can be behind (or AHEAD) of the voltage.

Almost if the load is an inductive load it can draw slightly more power as the AC wave can be out of phase.

PS on the welder rating plate you should find it's draw for the AC side.

neither my mig set nor my arc give max ac draw which would be easy, however using maths(blurgh) it seems that under max load the mig is ~1900w and the arc ~3900w so will have to see where that gets me.

cheers all.
