alternator not charging
« on: May 14, 2010, 18:08:00 »
hi i've got a 96 300tdi and the alternator not charging, i've check it with a volt meter and it only reads whats in the battery, battery is good and the alternator is new.
i've checked the b+ lead that goes to the battery and thats all ok.
so the main question is where do the other two wires go one is w and the other is (i think quote me if i'm wrong) for the rev counter.

thanks mobi

is ya battery light working on the dash,im not to sure how the charging system works on these motors, but i know there alot of vehicles,if the bulb has gone,it wont charge, cause there is nothing to excite the coils or windings, whatever you like to call them in the alternator,i may be wrong, thats how alot of old motors work, but then all landrovers do seem to be similar to the old school stuff, simply little jobs like that can be a real pain, lol.

other 2 leads are rev counter (as you said) and the battery light.

Should be showing about 14.4 volts when working right on a meter.

Sounds like it is probably knackered. Mine went recently (2 hours from home at 1am ) but the light never came on at all. My radio went off which i assumed was faulty at first. Then the heater stopped working and then the rev counter was dancing up and down like a good un. Finally followed by the lights dimming and engine dying.

If you do need a new one shop around first. I was quoted between £150 and £325 from the locals round here. Amazing how they can vary so much !

if the rev counter is reading zero its not getting the right signal.
it could be a case of trial and error by connecting the 2 wires to different connections on the alternator.
just to clarify.... you had a volt meter between the battery pos and neg and only showed battery voltage with the engine running. is that right?

i have the same trouble with my 200tdi, i have a diode split charge box but if i wire it up correctly the battery warning light comes on even tho its charging well. its to do with the diode im told!!

just to clarify this is the second alternator or third! i changed it about 18 months ago and all was fine and put another new one on when the problem started, i thought it was a faulty new alternator so got it replaced and i still got the same problem. to clarify these are new oem parts not britpart.
the problem first started when i took it though a puddle (the puddle was up to the windows and very muddy) about an hour after the rev counter stopped working and the batt light came on but if rev up to 4000rpm the light would go out, and stay out  for a while (about 10 mins) but now the light is staying on at all revs and still not charging.

mobi, thats how I kill my alternators, fill them with mud/water and it gets them in the end !!!
Buy them from ebay at the right price (£5-10) and you always have a spare,
I just used my last one, so need to find another,
