Tyre Fitters
« on: May 24, 2010, 16:08:43 »
Hi does anyone know anywhere round Ely area that does not want to rip me off changing my rims,

I need a set of tyres taking off rims and then the tyres taking off my rims and put back on the other rims. But every place I been to is asking for Silly prices.

Surely someone has got one of these in there shed / garage that can do it for a few beer tokens. I don't mind if there not balanced I can get them balanced just was them fitted.

Thanks,
      Baz

No, why,.
My 35" creepy crawlers were put onto the rims by mke with tyre levers, so were my old kumop KL71s on freestyle alloys, oh yeah, and the BFG all terrains to a set of boosts straight out of the show room!

Its so easy to do if you know how, i spend most of my time at work changing tractor and trailer tyres that it is second nature to me  :D

I change anything over 21 inch and anything under 12 inch buy hand with levers I can do them all by hand a 10 inch mini wheel is hard work but a 22.5 truck tyre is easy the more rubber u have the easer it is trust me

what's to joke about, it's a piece of [throw it].

Reason why they are charging the OP an unreasonable amount is because he didn't buy the tyres from them. Blag that that buy your wife's car tyres from them and will buy yours in future if they would just charge their normal subsidised rate. Or get yourself down to farm supplies and get some decent levers, read up how to break and reseat the bead and DIY - it's a useful skill to learn.

Finally, someone who agrees with me.
Yes it is a skill but i takes no longer to change a tyre with levers than with an expensive machine.
No bother to me to do any size tyres as i have a 6' tyre lever for the tight little ones  ;)

Unfortunately in the modern world it is more than just 10 minutes of his time.  A tyre fitter will be obliged, at very least under "duty of care" to check that your tyres are within their 6 year shelf life, undamaged with sufficient tread and have no repairs that make then unroadworthy.  If the tyre/wheel assembly were later to fail then he would be liable to investigation.

So can you really blame him for not wanting to do you it "as a favour"?

I have used a second hand tyre place on occasion, they will NOT sell a wheel/tyre assembly without removing the tyre and visually checking it inside before refitting it, They told me it's not legal (NOT SURE IF THAT IS TRUE) but it's probably more than hos job's worth to take any risks.

flood of compressed air, straps and compressed air , ether ignition  but fun , big floppy extreme MT tyres like anacondas etc will usually reseat on bead with nothing more than a puny electric tyre inflater. If there is an inner tube then it simple, just inflate. Only going to damage a steel rim with levers if you go at like an animal. Your only easing the tyre away from the edge of the rim or over rim. I find if I start to struggle and have to put effort in then it usually means I am going at in wrong manner... reposition  the tools, try different different part until the work is easy...never have the temptation to use brute force.

I use a highlift attachment to break the bead. http://www.beadbreaker.co.uk/

I think the method of usign tyre levers has been around for longer than using machines. The machines only invented to make everyday professional tyre fitting less back breaking.

if you think tyre fitting with levers is unbelievable then how we balance them will really blow your mind

I had mine changed over by a local tyre garage for a tenner a wheel and I thought that was pretty reasonable.

 I use easystart too, just need a tiny amount not like the youtube videos where they use loads of it or lighter fluid [-X Just make sure the valve is in though else the hot air escaping melts the brass out of the valve  :)

I had to use petrol at an off road site, that made a bit bang!

If you cant pull the tyre over the rim with the lever then you havnt got the tyre into the well in the rim.
If you carry on forcing it you will put a slight ding in the rim and more likely if you carry on going, tear the steel cables in the bead!

Doesnt take too much effort to put a tyre on a rim.......i will make baz do one just so you can see how easy it is  ;)

Had the offer of a tyre fitting machine but rather use a bit of manual labour because it is rewarding at the end of the day and there is no need to spend the cash to do something that i can already do with a little bit of effort and not much time
