v8 auto box to 200 tdi
« on: May 26, 2010, 11:46:23 »
can anyone tell me if i can keep the auto box from my v8 to mate up to the 200 tdi? are the box's different ratio's or is it just the transfer box that needs changing.
the reason I ask is because im swapping the v8 for a tdi and would like to keep it auto if i can, not a great drama if not but i will have to get a pedal box, centre console etc
thanks in advance
Rich

The transfer box is the saem but the torque converter is a different size (samller on the TDi) and the change points are all different, the TDi will over rev with anything more than minimal throttle openings.

The box is essentially the same unit but needs re-valving to suit the TDi.

There was a TDi auto box for sale recenlty, but I guess you are trying to keep costs down.

yeah, was hoping to keep cost low, i just bought engine & box complete. did see a non ecu zf auto for a tdi on the bay for 200, which aint that bad but still more expense than a pedal box.

You bought the engine & box complete, is that a manual box then?  I'm assuming the auto is the one in the car already.

£200 is good for a decent auto box I think.

yeah the car is a v8 auto. 200 is a good price but its just beyond me at the moment. I may hang on a bit longer and save a few quid for the auto box route. Am I right in thinking I need to get different props if I use the manual box?

Errr, dunno actually.  I know that Tim's 300 TDi has a shorter front prop than my hard dash RRC, both are manual.

Might be worth checking part numbers on propshafts on Rimmer bros website to see which ones are the same.  I need ot check one on RRRs TDi auto, probably find it's like no other car I have.

I'm guessing that manual TDis have shorter props anyway, I do know the input shaft of the manual is different and the 1st gear is lower that for a V8.

The V8 has a gearbox cooler on both auto and manual, the TDi needs a lot less cooling and the manual won't have one as standard (but you can fit it as you'll have most of the parts).

ALSO, our 300TDis have a different cross member under the gearbox, it sits further back and that might be because of the exhaust, not sure.

TBH it's not very often I crawl under more than one RRC a day anymore
