« on: June 30, 2010, 13:41:28 »
I want to fit a high level brake light to my 1991 RRC.......but do you think I can get into the back of the rear brake lights to access the wiring?  :x

How do I get in please?

Thanks!

When I added mine, I didn't go to the back of the light unit.  You can pull the trim back on the c pillar to find the wiring and connect to that.  You only need the 12v supply to the brake lights as any earth will do the job

I have to admit that I can't remember exactly what I did, but I do vaguely recall taking the spare wheel out.  I think I dropped the wire down behind the c-pillar trim after pulling the head lining down a bit and then it was accesible at the bottom

Next time I'm in the boot I'll take a look and remember what I did - it was about 10 years ago now!

The wiring runs along the edge of the roof on each side behind the headlining, you can tap into it from there :-)

Thanks.  One last question: what colour is the +12v going to the brake lights?

I'd guess at red/yellow.  Drop the tail light out to check then remove the rear speakers and have a lookinside.  you can pull the headlining away but if you pull too hard the backing will kink permenantly.

Stop light wire is green/purple, there is one either side in the harness behind the D post trim.  (Red/yellow is rear fog)

Lucas wiring colours were fairly standardised across a wide range of 1950s-1990s vehicles

It was a guess

Rear tal lights, you should see a row of screws at the top, sides and bottom.  There are 4 screws holding each lens on and 6 holding the whole lamp unit on, 4 through the back and 2 on the side.  These are self-tappers into a clip so you can remove the light and replace it without it coming loose, just be careful with the foam gasket if it's stuck in place.

The wiring to the rear clusters goes through a grommet in the rear side wing, just ahead of the tail light but in front of the rear door frame so you can't get at in easily with the light out, best to splice into the wiring inside the car.
