ZF 4 speed

Unless you have a very big engine with lots of power you don't need.

IMHO.. more drivable, lighter, less power loss

Defo the 4 speed ZF.

Some believe the 3 speed is stronger but Ive run the 4 speed for 3 years with no probs at all and I have seen my mates 3 speed go bang!!  Hes running a ZF now aswell.

Loads of them about aswell and now quiote cheap.  Seen a few on ebay that didnt sell and they wanted a £100.

Hmmm auto....  I love it!!!!  8)

Now heres a thing with my Disco auto box, it is supposed to be a 4 speed, or at least it goes 1-2-3-D so I assume it is 4 speed, yet at around 53pmh, there is definate engine speed change downwards suggesting another gear/overdrive  :?

Is this normal??

If you carefully listen to the shift change, there is definately another 'something' there at 53mph
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

That is the torque converter locking up.   It's a feature of the ZF box to help improve fuel economy by reducing the losses caused in the viscous coupling of the torque converter.

The lock up speed is just over 40 mph on the 3.5L boxes, and just over 50 mph on the 3.9 box

Yeah you have the 4 speed ZF.  A good box.

You'll know when they go wrong, you'll find your disco reving with no drive!!!

They are great boxes and usually well outlast anything else on your disco.  Just make sure you change the oil and filter in it when needed and she'll run forever!!!!

I thought mine had gone bang last weekend (hence this post) and it was simply the top pipe had worked loose and thrown all 7.5 litres of ATF fluid out onto my road!     Tightened the pipe, filled her up and now she is sweet as a nut again!   :D

Ive got a 300tdi disco to tug the hybrid behind and I love the auto!!!!!

Makes towing a breeze.  I dont know if the tdi auto is diff to the V8 auto but I would grab the bits as getting spares is a pain as no one wants to split the box!!

Grab the bits for sure Id say
