The bumper mounted indicators are there because of a requirement for the rear lights to be seen at all times... the logic is that having the rear door open (with spare wheel in place) would block the view of any offside lights from behind...

Having said that, I have a HD rear bumper with no repeater lights and have MOT'd the car several times in this form... mind you, there are no light holes in the HD bumper... simply cutting the wires and having inoperable lights still fitted would probably raise concerns!

The other issue is getting the remaining lights to work - the relay thinks that you have a missing (ie blown) bulb and therefore flashes fast.

You will need to play around with relays to get it all working correctly - I tried a 200 relay which didn't work and ended up with a couple before I stumbled over one that happened to be OK...

Hope this is of (some) help!

When I had my HD bumper fitted, the lights were pulled through into the boot, behind the inside boot lights.

Depending what year the Disco was made it has one of 2 types of relay.  The 200 series relay will not fit, the 300 series is thinner and non-standard.  On the side it will tell you how many lamps it was designed to illuminate.  If it's a non-trailer 3-pin type it will say something like 3x21w+25w ie 3 bulbs plus repeater.  The RRC one will say 2x21w+5w and if unsure this is the one to get if you remove the lower lamps.

If you want a trailer relay, they are a bit harder to track down, it will tell you the max load with trailer coupled and the trailer tell-tale repeater flashing.

If you use thew wromg relay it won't work properly. Remove 1 bulb it will flash too fast as a bulb failure warning.  Add one too many it wil lthink you have a trailer connected.

Also, on the 300 the flasher relay is on the MFU and OEM ones are a sod to remove, they have 2 clips holding them in place.

But as said, the lights in the bumper are a legal requirement.

Wouldn't like to say, they were part of the type approval though as they were present when new.  As for the MOT, if they aren't there they can't test them, not really relevent, it's the lighting regs yyu need to check.

300TDi had two different designs for rear lights. Some like mine (1994) only had indicator/brake in the bumper some had the quarter light cluster and in the bumper also. I found some 200TDi quarter light clusters with indicator lenses and replaced mine and treated myself to a heavy duty bumper without any light cutouts. Pulled the wires through from the indicators and wired the new clusters up. Been through the MOT several times now with no probs.  If you're going to remove the lights from the bumper get a new bumper and pull the wires through. If you have the dual display then you can always wire them into bulbs and just leave them in the quarter panels where nobody will see them, that way you don't have to change the ECU.

if rear bumper lights are fitted then they have to work for mot easiest way round it if u wanna get rid of em is to get either a 200 rear bumper or a hd one an to get around the indicator relay is easy just put 21w bulbs in the holder instead of 5w ones that way will think its runnin 2 bulbs instead of one ive had mine like that for over 2 years with no problems what so ever

I gitted a 200 HD bumper to my 1995 300, no lights in the bumper, pulled the cables back through to inside, had no problem with the remaining indicators flashing any differently, and have had 3 MOT's since with no problems at all.

It's the type approval for the MY you will fall foul of, and a smart MoT tester might pick it up, as stated earlier it was a requirement as when the rear door is open it hides the RH light cluster, and the reason D2 light clusters are mounted higher.
