How are you going to hold it in, when there is only a lap belt fitted?

I think you will have to abide by the height regulations, and personally I wouldn't trust a child in just a lap belt. I'm sure there was a film from the Roads Reseaerch people showing how they "folded" up and caused massive internal damage

If you have no choice but to carry the child in the centre seat, then any belt is better than no belt..... however, the centre seat location means their head might end up directly in line with the gearlever in a crash. Not something I'd be happy with.

I'd never heard about the internal injuries issue, but I have no reason to doubt it.

On a related note, have you ever driven the vehicle with someone in the centre seat? It's almost impossible to change gear

I wouldn't say that it's hard to drive with some one the middle seat as ( well in mine it wasn't hard as being an older motor it had the longer gear leaver ) i used to drive like that while the lad was still in a car seat and the misses used to sit on the middle seat, as for using a booster seat on the middle seat i think that that'll be a big NO as a lap belt has different reg's as a 3 point belt has
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, then reverse over it...

Copied off the internet -

Q: Can I use my booster seat with a lap belt?

A: Booster seats and cushions are usually designed to work with a three point belt and require the diagonal strap to safely restrain an occupant, although there are some Group 2 seats which are crash tested and pass the ECE R44 using just a lap belt.

You should check the instructions for the booster seat to see if it can be used with just a lap belt. If the booster seat or cushion is designed for use with a three point belt only, then you should NOT use it with a lap belt.

It is worth contacting some child car seat manufacturers or retailers to find the correct child seat which will work with the lap belt. Your local road safety department may also be able to recommend some good retailers in your area.

I wouldn't put my kid in a lap belt....

On a similar vein, I've managed to get hold of the factory diagrams for the internal hoop and seatbelt fittings for the mog. Due to it's age it does not have any seatbelts fitted, even for driving it myself I'm not very happy. Fitting lap belts is an option, but really, for the time it will take for fitting a hoop with a couple of fillets for fitting a 3 point, it's a no brainer.
