Apprenticeships

Hi =)

Im looking for apprenticeships in mechanical engineering....mostly car/ bike mechanics.

just posting on here if anyone knows anybody within the Leicestershire/Warwickshire/Coventry area that is looking for an apprentice in car or bike engineering.

Im 17, have been round engines all my life as my dad is a mechanic, know the basics of engines and a few more bits and bobs

Would be nice to have one in land rovers/ range rovers.

Well LR themselves take Apprentices, and I thought Jag do too.
Have you tried writing to all the different main dealers in your area?
You could also try the Council or Police and Fire Mechanical Engineering Depts

LR havent got any jobs in engineering, im going to write to all the main dealers in my area.

Right, Hello!

Firstly i will just explain my background then i will explain how i got here!
So - i was pushed down the route of applying for univeristy after my A levels, so naturally went to Southampton Solent for approx 5 months before seriously considering giving it a miss. I diddnt know what to do, i was not being taught enough i think i had 5 hours of lectures a week and  the rest of the time i was expected to do private study from textbooks - which is really not the way i learn. (the course was Sport science btw). So after many a discussion with my parents, i decided to quit and did not know what to do , so did some tennis coaching over the summer part time. Meanwhile someone gave me the greast idea "well you love tinkering with land rovers how about mechanics" BRILLIANT i thought so i looked online and different car manufacturers etc.

So i then Applied ONLINE to 5 comapnies.

BMW UK,
AUDI UK,
LR UK,
Subaru world rally team,
Rolls-Royce motor cars.

For BMW i had to do some difficult online maths stuff, things like differentiation, trig, logs etc... but seemed to do OK.

I submitted my CV's to all of them and Subaru contacted me first and basically said no im not the person they are after. (i think they need the sort of guys with lots of garage experience, can change a clutch in 30 minutes etc.)

Next was RR. They contacted me and asked me to come in for testing. i did that then they asked me to some in for an interveiw. Then more interveiws, then more testing, all this went on for around 2 weeks. i did my very best, sh*tting myself for the interveiw processes but still, tried my hardest. They then came back to me about 2 weeks after all this and offered me a job/apprenticeship spot. (by this time i had not heard back from the other companies, so i said immidately, yes.

Within the week of me accepting it, i then got calls from the other 3 companies, all asking me to come for an interveiw, however i had to declince and i said to them they should offer the position to someone else as i had already been accepted at RR.

The rest is history.

so by now i am coming up to my second year at RR and always saying to myself that was the best decision i have ever made. i could have stuck out university, and got a degree that i probably would never use, get into lots of debt, etc etc... but i think now i have been working, have learnt so much, no debt, - yes ok its a bit of a contrast on the holiday front! (yes uni students, you do get LOADS of holiday) and it can be frustrating if my mates say hey are you free on tuesday afternoon to which i reply - No im working.

i will apply for RR and well as i explained a bit back no jobs are going at LR

but the examination process with maths an stuff, i cant do it at all to be perfectly honest.
i will give it a shot anyway.

i have applied for quite a few companies so far but i will try at RR for an apprenticeship.

Best apprenticeship is to train to be a gas fitter.

I work indoors, don't get covered in oil or other crap and I earn just short of 30K for a four and a half day week.

You would probably have to start off as a plumber then move up to gas but believe me you will have a job for life.

Try your local council as they have to service all their tenants boilers and usually take on some apprentices every year.

Most mechanical engineers these days dont go down the apprenticeship route, just college and uni. But you can still get it through the Btec - HNC - HND - Degree route, as long as your employer will give you the time off to do it all part time.

BT have just closed their apprentaship scheme for this year. They had over 100 applicants for every position.
