just got back from the slroc compsafari today & i finished 4th overall (woooohoooooo)
though it was gonna be a tough day as every1 else was in a "bowler" of some description & im normally at the back in my standard 90,well today was my day,just fitted new springs all round after giving the calculator a work out last weeknd  & it just flew over the bumps no probs,will post some pics of me poping a wheelie over the finish (well 8ft of the deck is high when ur driving)  :lol:  8)

i said that 1 day & look where i am now,was 8th over all in the championship last year n goin hard this year,did only 900 miles last year  & cost bout £700 for all the work spares,entry fees etc

It needn't be that expensive and there are clubs all over the country that run comps like that - let us know where you are based and I'll point you in the right direction.

I bought my Discovery for £2500 nearly ready to race just needed a gearbox and transfer box.  I spent about £1000 (could've done it cheaper) and was there on the start line, finally living that dream.

It is addictive though and whilst I still compete on a shoestring, I also plough all the money I can afford into it.  I do the Hillrally series, which are more expensive, but the events are big!  :D

Club event entry fees start at around £50 a day.

Okay Henry,

The Ideal events for me, would be Offroad (Think you might Have Guessed that)

Single Occupancy (i.e. no requirement for a co-driver)

Timed Race.

Can enter with anything from a SIII to a 05 Plate Range Rover (If you are Clincally Insane and Loaded).

So I guess on most off road sites, a reasonable track could be set out, including hills, water, deep mud etc. etc. Then depending on the length of the track, and size of the site, your time over x laps is what matters.

Based in Leeds, but I'll travel for the right events. What would you recommend??

Don't have a Race License but I used to do some Drag Racing years ago.

Excellent Drum!

Can help with that easily.  You have described comp safari (speed events - like those that Redline does) to a tee.  Although they are most similar to single venue stage rallies that take place on rough tacks and off road you do not need a navigator because the course is well signed.  It is sometimes useful for someone else to operate the wipers and the horn though!

SIII would be fine to enter.  I have done many years in the navigators seat of a S1!  If you can afford to enter an 05 plate Range Rover then you had better come and do the British Championship!

Or come and have a look at a round of the Hi-Q British Off Road Championship.  Next one is Shropshire.

Excellent, I've had a hankering to build a TDi Pickup\Off Roader for quite some time, and this would give me a reason to do it, rather than it just been a toy. (Have I convinced anyone??)

My latest plan (I know I have a different one every week), is to go to a few of the NORC events, have a chat to some of the competitors have a look around. If I like what I see, get a car ready for next season.

btw if you want to go fast cheaply a tuned tdi racer is the way to go,at the first comp of the year i spent roughly £40 on fuel,another member with a tdi bowler drove to the event,did it & went home on roughly £15 of fuel,proper white diesel  :shock:

Most of my friends are wusses, and think I'm mad, when I take the 110 to work on a Monday with a mud line just above the door handles.  :D

One of the guys I work for, has just bought a Range Rover, and is pleased as punch with it, but when I suggested he just followed me, he'd be fine, he went white :D Don't know why  :?

There are some fast people competing with SLROC so 4th overall is a fantastic result.  Are the results available somewhere on the web?  Who beat you?  I imagine Lee Bartlett was first.  Do I know the others?

I see that you're running SAT-type tyres, do you usually run these?  Are they radials?

Second would it not be a good idea to have some sort of members racing forum where members who race,comp or trail could let us know where and when so we can show a bit of support and you never know might even start a few off.. 8)

also it would put a few quid into the clubs running the things  :D

My fastest lap was 3m.29 & lee bartletts was 3m01 & most laps i was 15 sec behind him,was running with stu howe most laps & infront of d mcintosh.
they are sats henry,mainly use them cos my dad lends me them & they are fairly easy on the transmission,also handy for the hight advantage as most others are runnin 205 diamonds or machos,currently thinkin bout buying a set o 205 diamonds just for comps as it helps the gearing

Thanks Michael - impressive result indeed!

I'm not knocking SATs, having done many Hillrallies on them with Mr.Bruce I can quite understand the benefits.  There were times even after I had got hold of some diamonds that we still ran the SATs just to give us the space under the diffs over everyone else.

Radials were much nicer on the road sections though!

I've just bought some diamonds for the Discovery just in case the Scottish Hillrally is wet, haven't tried them yet, but they look good.  Technic Hi-Landers, new to the market, but look strong, nice tread not too deep. Good value too!

still huming n hawing bout the borc this year as after i spoke to stewart mitchell it would seem id need a few more cogs as its fast  :shock: ,is there a time limit for entering the individual rounds?
i fitted rangie lhd springs for the comp n they feel bought right,still goes to the bumpstops but only when its landing fron 3ft+ up
