Newbie here! Grinding noise on 93 vitara, please help:(
« on: August 24, 2010, 09:18:54 »
Hi, new to the website really, first post i think but got a problem with my vitara.

It has an intermittant grinding noise which sounds like its coming from o/s/f wheel. Facts so far,

-Its not tyres rubbing on arches, have checked and screwed back potential bits it would catch on.

-Not wheel bearing, pulled it out and serviced it last night and tighten it all up as it should be.

-Seems to occur when i drive over a bump, will grind for a bit, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes briefly but then goes most of the time and wont come back for a bit. Noise will slow when you reduce speed, which suggests tyres or transmission.

-wheel seems to sit on the [throw it] a bit(lots of negative camber) but checked all struts and suspension and all seem to be fine, no breaks or anything hanging off.

-Vehicle has body lift and suspension lift and insa turbos.

-Sometimes when grinding, i've turned the wheels to go round corner and its stopped.

It all points to being tyres rubbing briefly on something but im really stuck and can't find anything that would be catching at all. I did take it out on a green lane last night and it performed great, no grinding noises at all!
I know its a long shot really, its difficult to help diagnose something online without seeing car but thought i might see if anyone had any other ideas that i could try and look at.

Your feedback would be much appreciated, many thanks
Alec

hi and welcome to the forum alex you say you have lifted your vit how have you done this? Also have you checked the cv boot to see if its ripped or torn and maybe let water into the joint? . If your camber  is out i'd suggest gettin some correction bolts fitted to save wear on your tires. Hope this helps simon

Thanks, to be honest i've just bought it. Its got a body lift and i believe a suspension lift, but only because the springs are obviously not standard and have recently been fitted.
CV boot is not ripped. How and where do i fit these camber correction bolts, pardon my lack of knowledge, new to vitaras! looking forward to playing with it though! lol

Free wheel hubs are the auto locking ones aren't they? It doesn't have manual locking hubs. I've had a mate at a garage look at it and he said its probably the cv joints, they are pretty hanging i think.
So ordered from work, will do job tomorrow night hopefully.
Will let you know if it fixes it.
Thanks

hi jim
no free wheeling hubs are manual locking type
like these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUZUKI-VITARA-FREE-WHEELING-HUBS-AND-DRIVE-SHAFTS-/320577173552?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM

having the autos is fine unless you plan to do proper offroading ,trouble is autos un-lock when you engage reverse so you end up
being in 2wheel drive then you put the hammer down then suddenly the front will lock up and prob break something on the front diff
