MOT Today !! Did it pass or fail ??
« on: September 08, 2010, 18:10:01 »
  FAILED  :'(

Only on a couple of bits though, Rear pads worn out ( thought they were a bit squeeky yesterday  )
And the ball joint on the end of the steering box drop arm is too wobbly ( not such a nice job  )

Apart from that nout else     Not even an advisory

Pads replaced today, Not sure how to attack the ball  joint issue, i have a repair kit but looks a lotta bits for me to fiddle with

I did last one in situ without removing arm, pretty straight forward. Recommend a genuine kit or at last a genuine rubber boot for it because the cheap ones do not like to stay put.

You'll bloody need em!!

I tried one of these kits once, gave up after a while and bought a new drop arm with the kit already in it!!!

I believe you can also use the drop arm from a later vehicle as they used track rod end type setups on em!!

I can't remember what the kit consists of but do not recall any drama to it? Cup insert, spring, spring seat, ball joint, ball retainer   I do recall something about tricky adjusting so ball is smooth - maybe the experience was so bad that I blanked it all out from memory

I do know cheap ass balls are not chromed.

Sometimes it is close to impossible to get the top cup out of the arm. I failed when I did my last one and had to leave the old one in.

There isn't any adjustment on them. Just a large spring to keep in place when reassembling it. In situ, I use a small jack with a suitable socket sat on top. Jack the socket into the bottom disc of the joint and remove the circlip. Lower it down and everything drops out. Then, in true Haynes fashion: "reassembly is a reversal of removal"

I MOT'd the Disco last week, failed on a headlight (reflector persished) and 2 brake pipes corroded excessively.

The tester said in all his years he'd never seen such an unwelded "rot free" chassis on a Disco. Then said it was probably my oil leak preserving it (cheeky fecker lol)

All passed now, except coming back from Jersey on Tuesday the clutch went
