The coated ply is often called Phenol ply - yes it's expensive but it's very hard weraing and not as slippy as normal ply (whether marine or not).

Chequerplate is OK as long as theres plenty of support underneath - personally I hate it as a trailer bed as it flexes and bends dead easy.

We have a trailer at work with some sort of extruded ali tounge and groove boards and it's great - light weight and strong.

Phenolic ply is very strong but does still end up slippery if wet... and particularly lethal if wet AND oily...

Marine ply is strong - a cheap and somewhat rudimentary fix is to paint it with Sandtex or other available masonery paint... you can even do it with ordinary paint and a good sprinkling of coarse sand between coats.
