300tdi bad smoke
« on: September 14, 2010, 13:54:51 »
got a problem with my 300tdi   as it now smokes when its doing 2000rpm and higher   over past 6 months its had a new rad, cylinder head  and water pump as the head gasket went  and the cambelt replaced  aswell

the strange thing is it doesnt do it all the time  either,  begining to think it might be either boost  actuator has seized up or its the turbo bearings  as it sometimes sounds rumbly as its coming onto boost  and then you get a huge plume of black smoke that covers the road behind   as soon as it drops back below 2000 rpm the smoke clears

any ideas  before i go and do something daft like fit a V8

blocked or dirty intercooler, dirty or worn turbo causing low or late boost, turbo bearings like you suspect.

Strip and clean all the inlet including the engine breather then you can tell what is getting oiled up regulalry.  The EGR lets soot in that miced with oil vapour makes a filthy sludge that clings to stuff.  Once clean look for oil on the turbo vanes (both sides) and oil coming form the breather into the turbo.

is it using any engine oil?
