I don't think they did a manual Delica - the L400s (the bigger one) all seem to be auto. There may have been a few manual L300s (the one that looks a bit like a ballistic toaster) but they don't seem common. There were 2wd versions of both, so make sure what you're buying is actually 4x4!
They apparently make great towcars, a lot are being bought for this now. There's plenty of power but I suspect the fuel economy would be horrific - they're thirsty things even solo due to the auto box. I know someone who bought a Chamonix (special edition with limited slip diffs) as a towcar/family bus and he loves it.
Watch for the coolant header tank exploding, which usually leads to catastrophic coolant loss and head gasket failure. From what I see Delis tend to have fewer but more spectacular breakdowns rather than dribbles of fluid or occasional funny noises which don't actually disable the vehicle.
Off road they're not quite as good as a standard Disco in stock form (mostly due to smaller tyres, the 4wd system is perfectly capable). You can lift them and fit larger rubber but it starts getting expensive then as most of the modifying parts are either from Japan or Australia. That said, there does seem to be a homebrew lift kit involving fitting Range Rover front springs to the back of it and cranking the front torsion bars down a bit.
