Heated washers (again)
« on: October 06, 2010, 16:25:09 »
I'm considering fitting these the cheap and simple way, by replacing the washer pipe with a longer one which is wrapped around a coolant hose. Anyone know which hose would be the best to aim for and where I might find this?

The idea of washer jets which help de-ice the windscreen is very appealing, and I doubt it'd be hot enough to crack the glass after being fired through freezing air in such a small quantity.

A lot of VW's have heated washer jets. My Corrado has a power and earth to each jet, activated when I put the screenwash pump on.

Yep, I did look at the heated nozzles from a RRC a while ago but I don't think they'd fit a Disco (they're designed to mount on top of a bonnet rather than under the trailing edge). I wouldn't be surprised if LR re-used the parts but they were a bit expensive to buy and then have to mangle them to fit.

I was thinking in terms of aiming for the heater hoses rather than the rad ones, as the longer the pipe the more hassle it will be to cable tie it and stop it fouling anything. The heater being at the back of the engine bay will be closer to the existing washer hose runs, so all I'd need to do is disconnect the pump from the nozzles, take a new pipe from the pump, wrap it around the heater hose a few times and then reconnect to the nozzles.

I've done this on my Td5 and it works a treat.  At the beginning of the year when we had all the snow it helped greatly.  And no, it won't crack your screen.

The pipe I got was just standard 6mm stuff from B&Q.  The only thing I did was wrap self-amalgamating tape around the ouside of the pipe on the top rad hose so that it stayed secure.  Happy days.
