Split charge.... the old way!
« on: October 18, 2010, 18:25:50 »
I have 2 battery's fitted now and I'm just about to hook them up. If I just conect the + to the + and the - to the - on both batterers will it just be like having 1 supper capacity battery? Will they both get charged at the same rate by the alternator?

I am also going to put in a Isolation switch on the negative terminal only.... so, the fridge will be wired to the 2nd battery, when I set up camp I will isolate the negative termanal to stop the fridge running down the main battery but the + will still be conected between the 2 batterers..... will that work? I will have the negative for the fridge ruining back to the second battery not earthed on the chassis

As you have probable guessed electrics are not my strong point!

Mine was like that for years mate, I only rewired it because when it went flat I ended up with 2 wrecked batteries so now I have a relay and a leisure battery on the LHS.

Let me know if you want to know how ;)

It will work, but since a split charge relay is only

Thanks for the reply s, I Think I will go ahead and wire it up like that, RRB I won't have it connected for most of the time so in affect it will be a backup battery while I'm not camping!
