P38 Over heating and pressurizing
« on: July 01, 2011, 20:04:59 »
Hi all. I would appreciate some help ASAP on this one please. We have a P38, 1996 4.6 V8 LPG converted. It started to overheat yesterday after we turned the cars heaters on. The temperature rocketed up and all the system was highly pressurised. I released the pressure and was left with a little coolant. (the rest was on the floor) I have topped it up, bled the system and it is still doing it....

When idling, the temp is fine, the pressure is fine, even when sitting at 3000 revs

when driving, the temp looks fine, but the pressure goes up within 3 miles.

When all coolant gone, engine overheats.

Can anyone help me with this, I am meant to be going to Leeds on Sunday.

Many thanks.

Hi, I have had the thermostat out, tested with kettle water and it opens. It is now just annoying the hell out of me. I have had the rad off and flushed it out, all seems fine and I cannot see any leaks of water in it. Does anyone want to come and have a look????

Just been out to check the coolant level and it is down near the bottom of the resevoir. The viscous fan can be stopped by hand, and the thermostat opens about a mm when put in boiling water

Sounds like you have the dredded cracked block common on the 4.0/4.6 i have had a few but gone back to the 3.9 engine as had no probs with them
If it ain't broke hit it with a big hammer then it will be.

I have been out today, running on petrol and all seems to be fine. It only does it when we run on LPG. I am thinking knackered vapourizer or issues running hot due to emissions.

Problem is now sorted. It was the internal workings of the vapourizer.  All fixed!!

We have driven over 200 miles without a hair over half way! Even towed a car 30 miles on a trailer.

Thanks for your help everyone.
