panhard bushes - how long do yours last?
« on: August 10, 2011, 20:08:25 »
It's been just over 2 years but only 10k miles since this thread ...

http://www.mud-club.com/index.php/topic,69389.msg583470.html#msg583470

Vast Majority is road mileage but a fair few weekly miles on pot holed tracks as well as the odd greenlane outing.

Strangely didn't get the death wobble this time but the bushes on the steering box end of the panhard are shot worse than I have ever seen them go before. These are those blue polybush ones as per that thread.

I was expecting a little more life than 10k for my

I have the blue PolyBush ones and I was thinking I should check them. I am beginning to think they are shot and that's after only 10k miles or so. I had the same type on my 110 for years and they were fine though.

Hi

I've had Red polybushes on my 110 for 10 years, still OK and it's 2" lifted.  Do road + greenlaning and a bit of offroading on a farm where I do bits, say it must be 30K.  The only place where I think mine are going is the 2 arms conecting to the rear axle so I've got a spare set ready.

Had a chance to remove the panhard couple days ago and replace it with a spare that's already fitted with red poly which will do until I order some superpro's (that's what is fitted to disco).

Seems I was too hasty in blaming the blue poly as that part of bush seems in good order. The wear and movement was actually thinning and shouldering of the 8.8HT bolt and the metal centre bush. Not sure what caused which part to wear first. I think I would have noticed major wear on the bolt last time I fitted but can't say for sure.

Anyway something to look out for in future and possible good practice to replace the bolt fixings as matter of routine along with the bushes or at least give them a good examination.

I replaced mine about 2 weeks ago, and while trying to sort out the dreaded death wobble have noticed there is quite a bit of movement in them.

Unfortunatly I fitted Britpart bushes which i usually try and stear clear of.

I'll get some poly bushes and fit them today or tomorrow.

The bolt should pull up tight and pinch the centre tube tight, it doesn't matter if the bolt is loose in the tube, so it sounds like you have wear in the fitting.

BTW, if you have "death wobble" check the tracking, going toe-out will reduce it. I'm not convinced if increasing the castor angle helps though, I thought it would :undecided:

what do you mean by "death wobble" is it when the steering goes where it likes and its hard to keep it in a straight line?

the front wheels suddenly start oscillating left and right very rapidly out of control (maybe after hitting a pot hole in road to start it off, sometime not), the steering wheel is trying to doing the same, only hope is to reduce power until it stops - hopefully it happens on a straight piece of road. I heard some say they have powered out of it - but those some must have balls of steel. Death wobble is a spectacular thing to witness when it happen to the landrover in front of you.... you think their wheel(s) are coming off.
