R380 Gearbox Oil... Grade...
« on: September 03, 2011, 07:52:25 »
I have been to my local motor factors and they told me that the 75/90 is the oil to go into the R380 gearbox. would this be ok? I have come away will the oil and i am wanting to change it this morning but i have just read that this MTF94 is the correct oil. Can anyone give me some advise if i do use the 75/90.

Cheers

Matt.

from what I recalll, MTF94 is the recommended like said, get it Landrover dealer but it may not be a on shelf stock item any more as they no longer use it in current models (or that's what they said when I last got it from them).

Previously the spec called for ATF, lots of people still use ATF in the R380 mainly because their manual says to do so. Others change to the better MTF94 or similar stuff like difflock evo oil to cure 2nd gear crunch.

cheers guys, I cant get hold of MTF today, so i think i will just go with the ATF and got some MTF ordered for when the cold weather comes in. I am not experiencing 2nd gear crunch as of yet but I did some wading with out the extended breather so I am thinking that i may have water in the gearbox.

Thanks again.

if there's water in there then you'll get some nice strawberry milkshake coming out when you drain it

Update: Changed the oil and used ATF type III. When i drained it the oil wasnt red but was brown with a creamy looking fluid (water) and the drain plug looked like i had been giving the box death. The difference in the smoothness of the gearchanges now are amazing. Cheers for the comments.
