steering play!!

I have got play in the steering on my 1997 disco but it don't seem to be there all the time sometimes there is nearly 1/8th of a turn (especially on hard lock) but others there is nothing. when towing the caravan back the other day i was struggling to keep it between the white lines!!! but now today it seems ok. any idear??

id stick a new box on it if its the box thats got play especialy if your towing a wobbaly box

You will get play at full lock because of the angles in the drag link.

Check the drop arm is tight and the balljoints are all good, the panhard rod bushes and steerinh column UJs.

Get someone to wiggle the steering whilst you look underneath, something somewhere is loose or worn, it's possible it is made worse when the front end gets lighter ie towing.
