Door Seals
« on: May 02, 2005, 12:16:31 »
Looking at the Defender Door Seals there is a fairly standard tubular type seal up both sides and along the top of the door frame. However the bottom seal is like a flap along the bottom edge of the door.

Why is it not a proper seal along the bottom edge of the door like it is on the frame??

What are the likely problems if I replace this with a proper seal?

I also think the doors wil seal better if the seals were a bit stiffer. If this is the case would inserting a length of say rubber fuel hose into the seals do any harm?

it will keep water in!

having the seal on the door means that when u open it there is a level ish surface to allow the water to get out.  I think that some of the earlier 90/110s had a seal there and they changed it.

That principle I can understand but the little flappy thing that is there doesn't even keep the water out!!

I'm thinking of replacing the one along the bottom of the door with a proper seal, so you still get the outward flow with the doors open, but should get a better seal when they're closed.

Defenders got carpets

Its not meant to keep water out. Its to let it in. If you've ever driven across a fast dflowing river you'll know why

A few weeks ago I was in Guy Salmon (Wakefield) looking at a new 90CSW in the showroom.
I could see the tiled floor through the gaps in the passenger door seal (between front edge & bottom) form the drivers seat.
On experimentation I could put my little finger stright through the gap!!

And, the chassis was rusty by the bumper bolts

The price is how much for a new 90CSW? £20,000 on the road?

I've had the same discussion recently about drainage holes in a 110, but in reality if I want water in I can open the door.

True, but given that the vehicle has the eqivalent of a 4" lift then water would have to be fairly deep to make any difference, and if it was fast moving and that deep then I wouldn't want to be in there anyway. Obviously that doesn't eliminate the unexpected scenarios, but for the 110, I'd prefer a proper seal on the doors. I don't believe the small amount of water that does leak in will make any difference to bouyancy, but it does make a mess.

Drum, ages ago I bought some lower door seals for my old B reg 90. Paddocks sent me the wrong ones and somehow I ended up keeping them. They are not the flappy things on later models but similar to the seal around the door opening. They are still in the wrapping if your interested in them? A few quid to cover the postage would be appreciated. Butcher them all you like, it may work :-)

The other thing to look out for is the shims behind the door hinges. Land Rover have spent all of £2.50 on R&D on these hinges and have concluded they can't be ar*ed to re-design them. So, they stick a handfull of the thin nylon shims behind the hinge in a fingers-crossed attempt to push the door in further to make it seal. As your's in new, take a look behind each hinge and count the shims. Technically there you only be 1, bet you've got several.
