Insurance Questions
« on: May 03, 2005, 08:43:42 »
Hi, can anyone help with these little questions,

I've always assumed that the immobiliser on my Discovery was a category one, but on looking through some paperwork I've found that it is actually a category two immobiliser.

My questions are these, (a) what exactly is the difference between category one and two and (b) should I be telling my insurance company at the double, and finally (c) will a category two cost me more or less to insure?

Thanks in advance for your help.

My understanding is :

* Category 1 - Vehicle Alarm and Immobiliser Systems
* Category 2 - Immobilser Systems
* Category 3 - Alarm Systems that upgrade existing Cat 2 immobilisers to a Cat 1 combined system

If your alarm was specified to your insurance company, then you will need to let them know, as it may affect your premium.  (Not in a good way unfortunately)

Thanks Tim,

I'm confused now, as far as I'm aware it has a factory fitted alarm system with a retrofit cat 2 immobiliser, so in effect it has the requirements for a cat 1 system, or am I reading it incorrectly?

Most insurance companies that I've dealt with ask if the vehicle has a factory fitted alarm or immobiliser - so if you said that your Disco has one, they should (in theory !) know if it's Cat 1 or 2

Tim's right - Thatcham Cat 1 is for alarms, Cat 2 is for immobiliser-only devices.

My missus works in the trade, I'll see if she can get the 'official' line.
