I've got quite a bad Oil leak from inside the Handbrake Drum.

I suspect its the Transfer box, output shaft seal.    I've removed the propshaft & Drum covering and can see what looks like a 30mm
Bolt on a shaft inside a bearing.  This seems to be the only place the oil can come from  Anyone know whats behind this, Is it an oil seal or bearing or both ?

The Haynes manual doesn't touch the Transfer box.

The output flange is there, with the big nut in the middle.  The flange sits in the oil seal and will just slide out if you remove the nut.  Behind that is the output shaft bearing.

Changing the seal is a simple enough job, just pull the old one out and put the new one back in.

The big problem comes if there's a problem causing the seal to fail. I've recently had a problem with the front seal and ended up changing the bearing (taking photos most of the way along the line), it was a mare of a job.

I was expecting the 30mm nut to take some shifting, considering the size of it.   £6 for a quality 30mm socket, and with a extension bar set to work on it.

It was bl**dy Lose !

Just loosened it slightly and the Oil flooded out.

Hopefully it has just come lose over time.   I've tightened it up and it seems to have cured it.  Just need a long run, towing the Caravan to check it out !

Fingers crossed.

Chock the wheel and then take the handbrake off. Somone sitting in the vehicle applying the footbrake helps.
Then try to see if there's any movement. It might be the bearing that has gone causing the seal to fail.
Mine only leaked (on the front) when I was towing the caravan (at first) and then started to leak while driving normally. A new seal didn't even last a fortnight.
Nipping it up might help. There's a taper bearing on the front shaft but I can't see one on the rear shaft.

Ignore that. It won't pull the taper bearing up at all

Too complicated these transfer boxes.
