quick release tow bar
« on: July 22, 2012, 20:28:02 »
Hi. I'm looking to make a quick release row bar for the 90. My idea is to get a piece of tube like a steel scaffold tube that fits into my NATO pintle cut about 4 inch long and weld that to two bits of two inch angle to drop it to the right height then stretch it back to the chassis with some more angle. I know my truck does not need a type approved tow bar but the above design gonna cause hassle with the man?

If you can't get there in a Land Rover you can't get there

Certainly not scaffold tube  Despite it's normal use, it is not strong enough.

Mine isn't using the NATO hitch, but for imformation, it consists of a substantial frame bolted to the chassis. A box section across the old anti-roll bar mounts. The ends are 10mm thick plate closing off the box section. Drilled and tapped so that the bolts use the roll bar mounts.
Then a large chunk of channel section welded to the back of the box section, going rearwards to the underside of the rear cross member and bolted up from underneath. It also has a welded plate going up the back face of the rear cross member and bolted in.

The removable hitch is fabricated from 8mm plate with thick wall tubes across inside.

The two are joined by 1" diameter tractor link pins.

My mate who runs his own garage and probably takes a car for an Mot most days of the week told me that the tow bar has now become part of the Mot test.

Ah, but that's the beauty of a quick release tow bar, just don't forget to take it off at MOT time!
