Bored of the day to day dullness
« on: May 04, 2005, 18:36:00 »
So, I work 9-5 every weekday, at the weekends, despite having waited all week for the time off to get things done, I'm too knackered to do anything. :-(

I seriously can't imagine spending the next 40-50 years doing this, it will undoubtedly drive me insane.

I just wish i had the confidence and the balls to work for myself, I'm a web developer by trade but am the quiet geeky type, not well suited to selling myself, my skills or a my business.

Sometimes I just think I should pack it in and do something more interesting, work for myself, doing something completely away from computers. I love working on computers but these days I find having spent all day on them, the last thing I want to do is go home and use the recreationally.

I look at programmes like "property ladder" or gardening programmes etc and figure I could do that, my dad and I gutted a house and rebuilt it and have spent years doing the gardening.  I know that doesn't make me a professional but i've known enough landscape gardeners and interiro designers to know anyone with the right skills can do it.

Anyone else bored by the daily grind, tempted to change your lives completely??

If only I could make money posting on internet forums.....

That's partly why we bought the 101 - hoping in a couple of years to take 6 months and travel somewhere interesting.

How about a total career change?

I'd love to do a bit of travelling, but I have lots of debt to pay off, 3 years of student loans and a graduate loan to pay for my post grad degree.

Changing careers would be nice but with my debt it has to be a pretty good wage which is hard if you're entering a new trade with little experience.

You live in the cornwall best bit of England beautiful beach's good surf and the best weather. Try living in the midlands when you love the sea. What you need to do is wright a good game program sell it and make a fortune. Then spent your time chasing the perfect wave, start with hawaii.

yes, I know, I'm a whining pansy, most beautiful place in England, but being stuck in a crappy office all day doesn't help me appreciate it

Working for your self is do-able - but you've got to be sure you're ready and willing to take on all the extra crap

Not that it will necessarily give you any extra free time - quite likely the opposite! I regularly work during the day, 2 - 3 hours in the evening and work weekends when I'm really busy!

The key thing is, I know I'm doing it all for my benefit   :D

Web development is something that you can generally do from anywhere - but you would need to "network" to get the work coming in. It's a tough one and something that takes a long time to build up.

Have you thought about contracting? Or maybe just look for a change of employer.

I used to contract in IT.  Great for the money, but if you didn't work you didn't get paid.  Then the IR35 stuff came in and stuffed me up at the same time my contract was ending.  Got a permie job at the same place - less money, but still very convenient for home.  Still a real grind every morning though :(

Yea, Im 23, have 2 years of students debts, but have set up my own business part time. Work most weekends and take time off from my week time job to take on bigger jobs. Although Im fortunate enough to have a week job that gives me 35 days holiday a year.

Even as a part time enterprise, you get some rubbish, 12 hour days 7 days a week sometimes gets to you. - Take a look at my web site!!

People from the South West tend to take it for granted regards
beaches, country etc.
But employment, transport, and several other issues don't
always make it a great place to live.
It's a long way to almost any event you care to mention
and crowded in the summer.

Paul Shapter.

i own a business but also work for someone else

pros for owning own business
you control it all

cons
commitment (you take a holiday you dont make money unless you have staff)

pros for working for someone else
at 5.30 you leave work behind (theoretically!)

cons
you aren in charge (even if you are chief exec!)

like everyone i would love a career change something thats 9-5 weekend free but i'm still paying off my divorce and and can't afford to leave my yes i work 24/7 always tired but at the end of the day i left school with no qualifications  and now have a very responsible job with al the hassles that go with it.

if only i had stayed on at school and got some qualifications then i would have gone into either one of the emergency services or the NHS not for the hero thing just knowing that you're helping somebody.

I have just been in the right time and the right place so for all my whinging mywork does pay well for the work that i do but i only wish i had stayed on at school and listened to my teachers

Ive been a self employed builder and landscape gardener for more years then i care to remember. At the end of a project i am left with a great deal of satisfaction but i have got to the stage where i realise the job is all consuming, and i have to divide each day into a  work period a time for my family commitments, and a part of the day just for me.Remember what Woody Allen, said about success in life "sometimes its just a question of turning up"!
