Vague steering TD5
« on: February 15, 2013, 22:59:20 »
Hi All, Just got my 3rd TD5 XS on an 03 plate face lift model and has done 92000 miles, my problem is the car has a mind of its own when on uneven road surfaces it veers left or right depending on the road camber, quite unnerving when it first happens, when on a flat road ie motorway she is ok. Had the tracking done and the wheels all balanced which has made a slight improvement, but she is still diving all over the place, any idears as to what would cause this problem. All my other discoverys have be really sure footed and a joy to drive but this girl is all over the place. Any help would be much appreciated.

Check the cheap stuff first, tyre pressures track rod ends and column joints then look at steering boxes.

Also check that the tyres have equal tread and that they are the same or similar tyre pattern. My old Disco TD5 used to dance about on the tramlines on the motorway. New tyres on the front cured it

Hi thanks for the replys so far, Short track rod end changed but has made no difference, tyre wear looks even across both front tyres, no leaks on the steering box which suggests that thats ok, long track rod end has the slightest of movement, think i'll change that next, may also swap the back wheels to the front. Any more advice would be of great help.
