clutch noise maybe .... HELP !
« on: May 06, 2005, 20:24:30 »
Hi all, i have a 200tdi that is making a strange noise from gearbox area i think ,the only way to describe it is like metal rubbing on metal it mostly does it when accelerating hard in 1st and 2nd .
I am thinking it is the clutch rivets slipping on the flywheel ,has anyone any other ideas or know if there is an inspection plate to have a look.

Thanks alot ROB

Right. Just ruling out bearings. It could be that the clutch plate is worn then or even that the flywheel has become warped in some way.

Check the props as well.

Checked props Guy seem ok there is slight bearing noise which goes just as you start to press the peddle down but the noise sounds like something turning and rubbing together

If it happens when the clutch is fully engaged and you are driving, and is more noticable in 1st and 2nd, I would think it is more likely to be the mainshaft or layshaft bearings getting noisy.

Hard to tell without actually hearing the noise of course :-)

perhaps, perhaps not...

but metal on metal is bad, and tim has been through more gearboxes than I have clean pairs of socks (how many you ask, ooh at least four)

Either way, an inspection plate is perhaps unlikely to tell you much :(
