Rear cross member on s3
« on: May 11, 2005, 19:00:29 »
Last weekend I went off roading and went into a hole and the back slammed onto the deck and now there are 2 slight indents in the chassis. Will this pass an MOT? Also the 2 bottom corners(near the tow ball holes) are rusted and a mate has welded these.

Is it time for anew chassis or can I get away with this for time to come?

If it does mean a new chassis how much will it costs / should roughly cost to get it welded on? I know a new section is about £50.

if you have the holes welded up make sure it is seem welded all the way around the patch as this is an M.O.T. requirement!! providing they are onle dents in the crossmember they won't fail as already told.

Worst case scenario, unless the thing is falling to bits, you wouldn't need a new chassis.  You can get a replacement rear cross member, or one with chassis legs, or a complete rear quarter chassis.
