Hallo, can anyone help with this quick question:

I have a 3.5 V8 and wish to change to a 200tdi.

Will the gearboxe on the V8 match straight up to the 200tdi ? (Id rather just swop the engine than the box as well !)

On the 200tdi at the moment is a LT77, Thanks,

p.s anyone want any V8 bits ?
Recommended wading depth 500 inches, no wait, im sure that was milimetres. And let me get this right. The breakover angle is 80 degrees....??

i believe the gearbox's are different, or the bellhousings are atleast

maybe easier just to dump an engine and gearbox in comlete. i'm sure mr muddyweb wil know exacly whats involved

Spot on Steve... they are different.

Get an engine and box together and drop the whole lot in.

Someone will be able to tell you for sure but..............
If I understand what your planning:- V8 out, 200 Tdi in and mate with V8's LT77 box?
I think the LT77 for the V8 has a longer mainshaft than the LT77 fitted to the 200 Tdi. Thus just changing the bellhousing wouldn't work cos the mainshaft will be too long.

I have a 200tdi Discovery, and yes. I want to put the engine from that into the 'V8'.

The V8 has been a pain in the backside -  just cant get it running right. Coupled with wanting a diesel anyway.... = break up the 200tdi for spares and sell on ebay whilst keeping the engine and box for the 'V8'.

Then sell all the 'V8' Bits. Theres a new air flow meter, recon transfer box etc etc.....

I just really needed to know whether to drop the engine and box 'as one' or seperate them ?

Can Muddyweb help answer that question ? (or anyone that knows!)

Up to you really.

If you have a hoist that can take both, then there are fewer nuts and bolts to take out, but the whole thing is harder to handle, and since it has to come out through the front / top, you will probably find it easier to take them out separately.   It's not so bad on a Defender because you can take the front of the vehicle off quite easily, but the angles are all quite steep to get the whole assembly out of the Disco engine bay.

Unless the Tdi has had a new clutch very recently, I would say you want to put new bits in there before you transplant it, so splitting the Tdi units will be needed as well.

Thankyou - thats the thing - the TDI has new clutch and new gearbox !!!

I was wondering about the angles myself.
I do have a hoist that will handle it and have plenty of room too. I guess Il just have to wait and see whats easiest when the time comes.

Are there any other compatibilty issues that I need to be aware of or should it be an easy swop with everything dropping straight in ?

Just had a quick look and it appears the enigine mount on the nearside is different...???  Anyone know of a 'quick fix ? Or do I have to cut the old mount off and weld it into the new bay ?
