Problem with Sumo bars
« on: May 19, 2005, 19:20:24 »
Anyone had problems fitting Sumo bars to a Disco?

I fitted all ok went to get wheel alignment checked they had problems adjusting it then when i drove home the steering wheel was not straight so back and forth a few times still could not get it right.Gave up with them and went somewhere else it took them 3 attempts but now very close to being right. He said he offset the steering?

Any surggestions?

Why the hell do you want to keep paying out all that money!

Take the front drag link off at one end then check the full lock to lock of the steering box, centre the box and refit the steering wheel dead centre.

Fit the drag link roughly central (checking the wheels or by having driven it in a staraight line before starting work)
Road test to check, if the wheel isn't lined up simply stretch or shrink the front drag link to get it right, you do not need your tracking checked for this.

Somewhere there is a proper dimension for the drag link but I can't remember where.

the steering lockstops will not need adjusting if they were right to begin with.

If the balljoints were fully screwed in to the track rod (the one at the back) then you should have no difficulty in adjusting the tracking to get it right.  This is a job you can do at home.

The Disco has an adjuster on the track rod (for the tracking) I was led to believe (after talking to a retailer at Donington) that they didn't have this adjuster so any adjustment had to be done at the track rod ends which would make it more difficult wheras on the normal bar on the disco you undo a clamp at the o/s TRE and another clape a few inches away. Then you rotate the "shaft" which allows it to be shortened or lengthened.
The TRE on a Disco have the same thread on each end. If my understanding of the sumo bars is correct then you'd need to have opposite threads on each end for it to work.
