Greenpeace - Climate Criminals !!!
« on: June 12, 2005, 14:39:51 »
I have been reading the Greenpeace web site as I am concerned about the climate and I am somewhat astounded by there apparent disregard for it.

If you are not aware they have mounted an anti landrover campaign, and as part of that they are encouraging people to download and print off as many copies of their anti 4x4 poster and fly post them all over the place.

Now am I right in thinking that paper (non recycled) comes from Trees. It takes approx 6% of a tree to produce 1 ream of copy paper (500 pages). Now if say 1 million people worldwide decide to print 50 copies of the poster that is 50 million pieces of paper, 100,000 reams. So based on that this equates to over 6,000 trees being felled in order to get the message across.

Greenpeace should be brought to task on this encouraging this sort of destruction of our trees.

Damian

ps.

Did you know that ancient woodland is not nearly as efficient as binding carbon as a young wood. Help the planet plant a tree today.

Just been to their web site
Love them sevles dont they!!
loads of pictures of them getting nicked!
Funny. My Mum was a member of Green Peece (got a newsletter, did'nt go on any missions!) and drove a V8 90.
Why now do they hate big cars so much?
Surely they run better these days?
Confused, you will be.

I actually sent GP an email about their 4x4 campaign mentioning about me being on LPG and all that and the response I got was very polite but so "I am not going to budge from my view". Shame really as I gave a good argument and they had no response.

Question is though is this really about the climate or class war. It will not be long before your 4x4 will be vandalised and the minority again win. Please someone tell me what is happening to this world.

Dont get me wrong I am concerned about climate. Living on 150M from the Sea I am very aware of rising sea levels and erosion to our cliffs but lets get this into perspective from my Bedroom I can see Dungeness Power Station and I do really feel we need totake another look at nuclear fuel as a way of slowing global warming.

Green peace have their hearts in the right place but seem to attack the wrong people. We all know we need to take more care of our planet but my measely 4000 miles a year in the v8 shouldnt take priority over finding alternate sources of energy.
Its easy to pick us out and I am sure there is often reverse snobbery involved. I would guess that most members went to University(partly at our expense) and come from wealthy backgrounds where Daddy is probably running around in a big merc. I have never seen a greenpeace sticker in a council estate!

Just had a search on some hunt sabatour sites to see what other lies they are writing about and came across a classic quote.

Bear in mind that most hunt sabs are greenpeace supporters, i found this on a site...........Land Rovers, life savers!

The quote was in reference to military 110's being used to transport the sabs around and disrupt the hunts.

One rule for them eh?

I wrote to my MP a couple of weeks ago about the anti 4x4 movement and got a very nice reply.  He appreciated the arguments I was putting across and was encouraged to recieve a letter from a 4x4 driver who cares about the environment.  As most of us in the mud-club have similar views perhaps it would be a good idea for all of us to contact our MPs to show that what we drive has nothing to do with how we feel about the environment, that it is our lifestyle as a whole which counts.  I was really pleased that he is of the opinion that arguing over whether one type of car is more inefficient than another is pointless on the scale of things.  He agrees with me that everyone should have a personal carbon quota, and leave it to us to partition it out in how we run our cars, businesses, homes, shopping, hobbies etc.  I'm all for this, and have been doing it ever since I bought the discovery.  I plant new trees to offset my anual carbon emissions from the landrover, I've super-insulated my home to use less gas, all our bulbs are energy saving, we don't have a dishwasher, and I'm quite happy to not take a holiday abroad this year.  If you add it all up, our househould produces far less CO2 in a year than the majority of households that simply don't care or are not aware of the issues of climate change.  The assumption that 4x4 drivers don't care about the climate just becuase their car uses 33% more fuel than the average saloon is nonsense.  Society is picking out scapegoats so they don't have to stop and look at their own polution problem.  They think that if they get 4x4s off the road it will solve everything...blind, naive, fools.

Yesterday's Sunday Telegraph had an article that reckoned global warming wasn't that bad.

Working from memory cold areas would get a slight temperature rise and hot areas would get more rainfall. Therefore tourism in Britain will improve as temperatures improve 1 or 2 degrees and food production will increase with better weather.

Hot places such as Australia and Africa will get more rainfall and also make them more productive.

Seems to be a win win situation to me :D

think I've said this before but I'll say it again.

How about someone writes a "standard" letter and post in forum so we can all email to any anti's sights or print and post to MP's etc?

I know this sounds like I'm being lazzy but I really havent a clue about emissions etc
I take my bottles, cans, paper etc to the relivent skip's at the recycling centre (although cant use the land rover now due to fact that need a permit for it at the tip - its a loooong story )
also this gives us chance to form a united effort against people who are knocking us simply because they just dont understand the facts or chose to ignore any information, details that dont fit in to there tunnel vision view of the world

Because standard letters get ignored.  As soon as someone gets 2 the same, then they are devalued.

Much better to write a letter expressing your own personal worries, questions, comments, etc.

To be honest, all the information is out there, so if you want to find out about emissions, etc.  you can.  That way you will also be better informed and prepared when it comes to dealing with the berks you meet in real life.

On climate change related to global warming the ABD had an article about there seems to be a fashionable view which is blinkered and an objective view looking at the reality of the fact!

It seems many scientist disagree with the fashionable conclusion 'that the world is getting warmer because of human activity' - but if they speak this view they have trouble getting funding for their research!

From "The letter Science Magazine refused to publish" http://www.staff.livjm.ac.uk/spsbpeis/Scienceletter.htm

"Of all 1117 abstracts (about global warming), only 13 (or 1%) explicitly endorse the 'consensus view'."

"does SCIENCE really want to stand behind her bizarre claim of a complete scientific consensus on global warming? Are you not aware that most observers know only too well that there is absolutely *no* consensus within the scientific community about global warming science?"

Interesting reading in light of the media and government steam-rollering!

How about you write down all the ways in which you do your bit for the environment, like recycling, insulation in the home, sharing your car, walking to work, energy saving bulbs etc.  Then write down how you use your landrover.  I guess it's a deisel so 30 mpg is not hard to prove.  Go to the 4x4 prejudice website in some peoples signatures and see how many other cars are less efficient than yours.  Think about why you need your landrover, and write something positive about exploring ancient byways in a responsible manner, caring for the countryside and generally having a good time being there.  You could mention that seeing the occasional 4x4 in the countryside doesn't bother you or disturb your day, and that you would expect to see such vehicles there.  I was able to mention that because I have a large family, that having 7 seats means that we can have only one car instead of two.  You could also mention that the childish bickering between good cars and bad cars is not helping the issue and that the only real solution is to bring fuel cell cars with zero emissions into play, our MPs could push for this.  I mentioned that the antis and their fake parking tickets and propoganda were creating an air of intimidation and fear across the country and that this could develop into the american situation where families, their kids, their cars and their homes are targetted by these groups.

-Basically show that you care about the climate and are doing your bit to offset your vehicle emissions.
-You need your 90 defender and use it responsibly to explore the countryside, and it is your right to drive this kind of car.
-Your 90 is no more poluting than most if not all high performance cars such as porsches, jags, and even many people carriers.
-The anit 4x4 movement is simply using fear and intimidation to target us and what's needed is proper engagement with the issues and cooperation.
Cheers
James
