hi all.....i have been very busy welding up my disco.....lots of man hours have gone in to her so far.... the question i have is after thinking i had almost finished i decided to lift the carpet in the boot..... :shock: ....i wish i hadnt bothered now. the whole back end of the floor has gone....

as you can see i have made a start in making the area good. what i want to try and find out is where the rear end normally leaks from to try and solve this. looks like it has been leaking for years. im just going to make up a floor for now as a temp measure for the MOT . is there a comon place to look for a leak in the boot.? any help would be brilliant

Mostly from the Alpine lights or rear door seal or the rear windows.

Mine was the sunroofs. Both of them.

so it is a common sight then............... gonna weld it up for now and get the ticket......i will then cut it out completly and put a new floor in.....

Thats the best move.
Floor panel is only Ã‚Â£40 from Paddocks.
Should be able to replace it within a day/ 2 tops.
Look around, plenty of people here have already done this.
You'll find pictures too.

trying not to sound smug

but am i the only disco owner who has sunroofs that work and dont leak?
although on my 1990 i have also the rear floor to do but its nowhere near as bad as that yet

I don't know if I dare say that my sunroofs don't leak. Other than when the rear door has been left open and/or I've got in too deep there's not been any damp in the rear of the motor.

Smug get!!
Mine were a nightmare.
Ended up sealing them up with Sicaflex.
No more leaks but i cant use them now.

mine don't :shock: i give the rubbers a good working over with silicon grease every 6 months or so and they stay lovely and water tight. and mines an 89 :P seem to be good sunroofs, britax ones i think

I tend to use olive oil.
An old tip from my caravanning. It keeps the rubber nice and supple.

Joint along the edge of the gutter at the back, but that is mainly trapped mud/water from below between the floor and the cross piece, look at the two further forward as well.....

BTDT, now I have a c/p cover over special ply floor, check my gallery.

It's entirely possible this has come through from underneath, muck trapped between the boot floor and that crossmember you can see. Why else would it have rusted through in such a neat, straight line?

well things have moved on....... today i took out the plastic trim between bumper and the door slam ( if thats what its called?).....found that the whole cross member is comletly rotten. its the bit thats hidden by the fuel tank. i have now decided that it would be best to replace with new pannels.....ie complete new rear floor. and new cross member. just now sure what you would call the cross member when ordering........any ideas....it runs behind the rear bumper and runs up to the rear rubber door seal......

Apart from the suggestions made above there is another place to look for leaks. Might as well stop it rather than soaking thoses new panels.

If you look at the roof gutter from the back and above (stand on a ladder or the rear bumper) and look at the join on the rear corner where 2 panels meet vertically. There's a plastic strip that covers the corner of the gutter and is held down with 2 plastic clips. Under this strip there's a factory BODGE. The 2 panels and the gutter edge don't quite meet so Land Rover filled it with something like P45. After a time it cracks and falls away leaving a small hole. Water that sits in the gutter, slowly seaps through, down the inside trim and often drips off the rear speakers if you have any fitted. Then works it's way down the inside of the trim to the floor panel, and there it sits for ever and a day.

What I did with mine to cure the problem was to warm the gutter corner strip with a hair dryer (it's brittle otherwise) remove it and clean up the p45 joint, then fill it with silicone sealant and replace the gutter strip. NO more wet floor for me.

It also helps short term if you park it facing down hill then the rear gutter doesn't stay full of water, it runs to the front. Great design eh? a gutter with no drain off, class :roll:

As others have said, it comes up from beneath. No matter how waterproof it is you'll have the same problem. They all do it...

cheers for the advice guys. i have now completly stopped patching the back end up as it seems some what futile :? . theres more holes than i know what to do with.
i am just waiting for some money to come in to order the parts from paddocks.
what i need to know is the name of the pannel ( cross member ) that runs directly behind the rear bumper as this is urm.........well not there any more :roll:
once i have fitted these new pannels she should be ready for an mot......well after i have kicked out all the spiders that have taken up residance. seem to think the holes in the floor are doors left open :lol: :lol: :lol:
