TD5 manuel

anyone done this mod??, seen a few adds for them quoteing 190+bhp with a plugin box upgrade fitted (witch ive already got) so im thinking about the big cooler and silcone hoses now, i would really like to improve the low down speed from pullaway in first gear, as thats the only place the engines seems to lack power, once she's moving theres plenty of go at 2000+rpm.

cheers

It's not an uncommon mod these days.

The normal suppliers will be happy to help you out... and don't forget that Allisport will give Mud-Club members a free ITG air filter with their intercoolers.

You can source intercoolers from other cars and 4x4 if you are into playing with different bits as I have mentioned in another link I have fitted is a Toyota MR 2 turbo intercooler. I have seen them for sale on eBay have a look. There easy to fit because the inlet and outlet are on the same side so you don’t have too many problems with the pipe work and they have a far greater flow rate and cooling rate than the standard intercooler. Plus if it fits in mine with the help of a tape measure I could check the sizes it should fit in yours. But if you want to go the easy route allard or ali sport and many others make it all just for you motor but at a price.

Won't fit a TD5 then....  :(

A TD5 already has a good design of intercooler as standard - due to the fact it is a single pass.

The TD5 is the only engine (except the 1600cc petrol) that Land Rover have produced with the inlet and exhaust manifolds on different sides of the head...

200 and 300 Tdi have the inlet and exhaust manifolds one above the other, which means the intercooler either needs to be a double pass (so both inlet and outlet end up on the same side) or a smaller single pass - which is fitted as standard.

Where as... a TD5 has the Exhaust on the N/S and the inlet on the O/S, and so as standard has a large single pass intercooler which is larger than the single pass fitted to 200 and 300 tdi's (due to the fact it passes the complete width of the rad)

A better bet for a TD5 may be to look down the lorry route!!!

I've seen a couple of Td5 (defenders mind) fitted with intercoolers off Ford Euro / Big Iveco trucks ... these were of a nice design with a much deeper core than most car ones.

But a deeper core can cause problems... i.e. won't fit unless you modify

Unless you want to start cutting the front of your Landy, or visit numerous car lorry breakers yards with tape measure in hand, it might be better to bite the bullet and spend your money with one of the specialists who make them... i.e. Allisport, Twisted Performace, Allard, JE Engieering etc etc.

IMHO... I wouldn't mind chopping and changing a 200 or even 300Tdi Disco... but a TD5 is still a bit expensive to start cutting and shifting bits.

The other intercooler that could possibly be made to fit is one off a Range Rover 38A diesel... I seem remember these are a decent size, and single pass as per a TD5... you could even have two welded together to increase the surface area.

The uprated intercoolers being offered for the Td5 are deeper than the standard - fine for a manual car, but on the auto there's a huge transmission cooler below the standard intercooler. I can't see how a bigger i/c could be fitted.

I'm sure the likes of Alisport have found a way around it, though ...

That reminds me - I need to remove my intercooler for a flush if the state of the inlet manifold is anything to go by.
